The documentary I’m Chevy Chase And You’re Not paints a complex portrait of the comedian. It delves into his challenging upbringing, difficult relationships, and family life. A key moment shows Chase clashing with the director, even asking her to remove the footage – but she refused. This all contributes to the idea that Chevy Chase can be difficult to work with. However, director Marina Zenovich believes he has ultimately accomplished something significant.
In an interview with WHNT, director Peter Zenovich discussed the difficult childhood Chevy Chase experienced. His documentary explores Chase’s troubled relationship with his mother and stepfather, revealing physical abuse and being confined to a basement for extended periods. Zenovich is particularly interested in how these experiences shaped Chase into the complex person he became.
I’m drawn to making films about complex characters, and I’m particularly interested in understanding human behavior. Chevy Chase just naturally fits the kind of stories I tell. I believe his upbringing is central to who he is; while I hesitate to use the word ‘trauma,’ he definitely seems to have experienced something deeply affecting, and he uses humor as a way to cope.
There’s a moment in the documentary where Marina told Chevy she was trying to understand him, and he playfully warned her it wouldn’t be easy. I think that really captures what draws her to her work. It’s amazing to me that she’ll tackle even the most difficult subjects, even when they’re being awful to her – she’s had people call her terrible names in interviews! It’s not the first time she’s gone deep on a complex personality either; she’s previously made documentaries about people like Richard Pryor, Lance Armstrong, Roman Polanski, and Robin Williams.
According to the director of I’m Chevy Chase And You’re Not, Chevy Chase’s greatest success isn’t his comedy—it’s his family. He managed to build a strong, positive relationship with his three daughters and wife, Jayne, breaking negative patterns from his own upbringing.
I believe his greatest accomplishment was overcoming the patterns of trauma passed down through his family. It’s a difficult concept to put into words, but it’s a remarkable achievement, don’t you think?
Beyond his professional life, he’s publicly described his wife as the most honest and beautiful woman he knows, and has expressed that becoming a father is his greatest achievement.
Even though a clip of Chase being unpleasant to Zenovich went viral in the documentary, it’s obvious he has a close and loving relationship with his wife and daughters. Throughout the film, Jayni Chase strongly supports Chevy, and his daughters openly discussed his serious health crisis and his funny reactions after recovering from a coma. They also shared their belief that he was treated unfairly while working on the show Community before he left.
Chevy Chase isn’t universally liked, and the documentary filmmakers actually struggled to find anyone from the show Community willing to talk about him publicly. Despite this, director Marina Zenovich feels Chase has achieved something remarkable with his family.
