is finally here, and people have strong opinions about it.
Inspired by George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg, this show offers a fresh perspective on the world of the Seven Kingdoms. Instead of focusing on powerful royal families vying for the Iron Throne, it centers on a humble knight who, while skilled with a horse, is short on money after his mentor’s death. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms follows the adventures of this knight and his young apprentice as they travel the land. Many viewers already believe the premiere episode showcases scenes that are as captivating as those in the original Game of Thrones series.
The Ashford Chair Scene Felt Familiar, Until It Was Not
After burying Ser Arlan of Pennytree, Dunk headed to Ashford, hoping to win some money in a tournament. To enter, he had to speak with the town’s steward, a man named Plummer, who turned out to be unexpected. Plummer told Dunk he needed someone to confirm he was a true knight before he could compete, which complicated Dunk’s plans.
Plummer’s demeanor then shifts from friendly to threatening, as he warns Dunk about a severe penalty for falsely claiming knighthood – the Ashford Chair. He details a gruesome punishment where liars would be stripped, hung by their limbs, and slowly lowered onto a chair fitted with a sharp spike, resulting in a bloody and agonizing death.
Dunk seemed clearly uncomfortable with the suggestion, but Plummer quickly brushed it off with a laugh, assuring him it was just a joke. This episode of Game of Thrones felt different from earlier ones, promising a more cheerful tone.
Dunk’s Tree Moment Was Gross and Hilarious
Following a humorous and somewhat bleak introduction to Dunk and his present circumstances – complete with memories of how Ser Arlan behaved and how Dunk eventually accepted it – the iconic theme from Game of Thrones, composed by Ramin Djawadi, began to play, building anticipation for the story to unfold.
The show quickly shifted away from its initial focus, ending the scene abruptly and causing a lot of debate among viewers. However, this unexpected turn was exactly what the series needed. While the franchise is known for violence, this particular episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms moved away from gore and spectacle. It abandoned the typical elements of the story – prophecies, power struggles, dragons, and political intrigue – offering something completely different.
Dunk and Lyonel Baratheon’s Dance Was the Most Refreshing Game of Thrones Interaction
When Dunk attempts to gain Ser Manfred Dondarrion’s support for his claim to knighthood, he’s invited to share a meal and enjoy some entertainment in Manfred’s tent. Dunk’s size and unkempt look immediately attract the attention of Lyonel, nicknamed the Laughing Storm. Their initial friendly chat becomes strained as Lyonel questions Dunk’s motives, but Dunk’s simple and charming explanation – he just came for “supper” – unexpectedly shifts the atmosphere.
The scene shifts to Lyonel and Dunk playfully trying to step on each other’s feet while dancing. As the atmosphere became more joyful, the two men ended up sharing a tipsy conversation, with Dunk sporting a pair of Baratheon antlers.
This interaction felt genuinely warm and friendly, unlike the often-complicated relationships in shows like Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. It’s rare to see such a positive connection between nobles and ordinary people in the world of Game of Thrones, making this moment stand out.
Dunk’s Promise to Egg Was a Sweet Touch
Although Dunk was the main focus of the premiere of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Dexter Sol Ansell was incredibly engaging as Egg, the orphaned boy hoping to become Dunk’s squire. Despite his small size, Egg was surprisingly assertive and even a bit rude, giving him an unusual air of confidence and power that didn’t quite fit his background as a child from Flea Bottom.
Though the hedge knight believed he’d lost the boy, he unexpectedly showed up again near the end of the first episode. The boy, nicknamed Egg, had built a fire, cared for Dunk’s clothes and horses, and even cooked dinner – effectively becoming Dunk’s squire without being asked.
Dunk promised the young boy, Egg, that he would always be cared for, making sure he had clothes and enough to eat. Egg would serve as a squire to the hedge knight during the upcoming tournament, and Dunk would decide later if he should continue in that role. This moment signaled the start of what was sure to be a strong and lasting friendship between them.
Look, as someone who’s followed Game of Thrones for years, I’ve braced myself for pretty grim stuff. But A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms feels different – it’s not just about the darkness, but explores other facets of Westeros. Honestly, it doesn’t feel like a detour at all; instead, it expands and enriches the already incredible world George R.R. Martin built.
Viewers Loved the Interaction Between the Prostitutes
Nudity and sexual content are common in Game of Thrones, and have sometimes upset viewers. Within the show’s world of Westeros, sex workers are often portrayed simply as objects. That’s what makes a scene with Dunk and the women servicing Ser Manfred Dondarrion so different—they’re shown as actual people, with personalities and agency, even playfully teasing Dunk.
Something I found really striking was a scene where the prostitutes, after Dunk questions them again, start playing this incredibly dark game – one of them pretends to be at her own funeral! It sounds bizarre, but it really showed they weren’t just props for the men around them; they had lives and a twisted sense of humor. And then, when Dunk actually got a little offended by something they said, one of them apologized – which was a total shock, honestly, given how things usually go on the show. This new series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, feels different from the other Game of Thrones shows, and it’s exciting to see this new angle on George R.R. Martin’s world. Both the creators and most fans seem really into it, and I definitely am!
