A fantastic, but often overlooked, crime thriller from the 2010s is now available on a new streaming service. The film boasts an impressive cast including Bradley Cooper, Eva Mendes, Ray Liotta, Rose Byrne, Mahershala Ali, Bruce Greenwood, Ben Mendelsohn, and Ryan Gosling, and was directed by Derek Cianfrance. While it received positive reviews and earned $47 million in theaters, it’s recently gained a dedicated following – partly due to a popular meme featuring one of the stars. The movie is The Place Beyond the Pines, and you can soon stream it.
Ryan Gosling’s 2012 crime thriller, The Place Beyond the Pines, will be available to stream on Peacock starting February 1st. The film, set in rural New York, tells a complex story in three parts. It begins with a stunt rider who turns to robbing banks to provide for his family, then shifts to the police officer trying to catch him, and finally follows the officer’s son years later. Here’s what the movie is about:
Driven by a desire to provide for his son and partner, a skilled motorcycle stunt rider turns to robbery, catching the eye of a determined police officer. Their paths collide, and the consequences ripple through both of their families.
Ryan Gosling gives a standout performance as Luke Glanton, a man desperately wanting to be a good father, but constantly struggling with violent impulses. Once the story moves away from his character, you really feel his absence. Bradley Cooper is equally impressive as Officer Avery, delivering one of his best roles yet. Director Derek Cianfrance, known for The Place Beyond the Pines, has continued to create critically acclaimed films like The Light Between Oceans (2016) and Exhibiting Forgiveness (2024). He also directed Channing Tatum in the wildly popular Roofman, released in 2025.
‘The Place Beyond the Pines’ Is “Heavy, Unexpected, and Highly Emotive”
