While Matthew McConaughey famously won an Oscar for his performance in the 2013 film Dallas Buyers Club, it’s his more recent movie, released in 2025, that’s currently gaining popularity on streaming platforms. The film, available on Apple TV+, is quickly becoming a hit for the service.
According to FlixPatrol, The Lost Bus has climbed to number 5 on Apple TV’s most-watched list in the United States as of January 23rd. The film is directed by Paul Greengrass.
Currently, The Lost Bus is performing well on Apple TV, ranking higher than Wolfs, Highest 2 Lowest, Fly Me to the Moon, and The Family Plan. The movie centers around Kevin McKay, a school bus driver who has fallen on hard times, and Mary Ludwig, a committed teacher. Together, they work to rescue 22 students from a dangerous fire.
The movie is inspired by the true story of McKay, who heroically rescued 22 students and two teachers during the 2018 Paradise, California wildfires. Recently, it received an Academy Award nomination for Best Visual Effects, where it will compete against Jurassic World Rebirth, F1, Sinners, and Avatar Fire and Ash.
The movie has received overwhelmingly positive reviews, with an 88% score from critics and a 95% rating from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. It marked Matthew McConaughey’s first leading role since 2019 and was initially released in select cinemas on September 19th, before becoming available to stream on Apple TV on October 3rd.
McConaughey on Working with The Lost Bus Director
In a recent interview on the podcast The Lost Bus, Matthew McConaughey discussed his appreciation for suspenseful thrillers. He explained that he enjoys the feeling of claustrophobia, citing the movie United 93 as an example. He’s drawn to the intense, physical reaction that comes from watching characters face danger in increasingly confined spaces with a sense of urgency and a ticking clock. He believes this creates a compelling and effective cinematic experience.
He’s incredibly skilled at creating a huge, sweeping cinematic experience with the fire acting as a powerful threat, while still keeping the story deeply personal and relatable. It’s a difficult balance to strike, and few directors can achieve it as effectively as he does. We actually trimmed the script significantly – it started at 135 pages and ended up around 50. The changes weren’t about cutting lines of dialogue, but about refining the characters’ actions and relationships. He doesn’t overcomplicate difficult scenes, but he does challenge you to elevate even the simplest ones. Overall, it was a fantastic experience working with him, as McConaughey shared.
