Beck Bennett is often considered one of the most popular and respected cast members in the history of Saturday Night Live, but his time on the show wasn’t always easy. He revealed that during his first few seasons, several people repeatedly told him he needed to lose weight. This feedback, particularly when delivered insensitively, weighed on him during his second season, but ultimately he decided to take their advice and get in shape.
While Bennett hasn’t openly discussed his weight loss, he recently revealed on The Good One podcast that show executives pressured him to lose weight during his second season at SNL. He explained that one person was particularly harsh, which made that year significantly more challenging for him. Here’s what he had to say…
Several people gave me feedback, sometimes harshly, and other times more gently. I’m intentionally not getting into specifics, but there was one person, someone not well-known, whose actions were really difficult to deal with and likely made my sophomore year even tougher. On the other hand, someone else explained things in a way that finally helped me understand.
I was really struck by what Bennett said about someone giving him feedback. He didn’t want to dwell on who it was, but explained it had been delivered so much better than previous comments about his weight. He said it wasn’t just what they said – that losing weight was a sensitive topic – but how they said it. Apparently, this person pointed out he was playing characters smaller than himself, and suggested getting to a similar size would actually help him feel more authentic and confident in those roles. It just seemed like a really insightful and helpful approach.
Bennett felt a strong connection to that idea, and when he was offered a short film focusing on weight loss between seasons two and three, he saw it as the ideal opportunity to improve his own health. He lost thirty pounds that summer and returned for season three noticeably fitter. This ultimately led to him becoming one of the most frequently featured cast members on Saturday Night Live.
When John Bennett left Saturday Night Live in 2021 to spend more time with his family and pursue other opportunities, many people quickly spoke about how much he was missed. Fellow cast member Sarah Sherman recently described him as a favorite among everyone at SNL – not just the cast, but also the crew and other staff. Sherman, who joined the show the season after Bennett’s departure, said she initially didn’t understand the hype, but quickly realized why everyone loved working with him after meeting him herself.
It’s no surprise that Bennett has been consistently working since leaving Saturday Night Live. He recently brought some humor to the Superman movie as Clark Kent’s colleague, Steve Lombard, and he’s also landed a significant role in the upcoming romantic comedy The Last Resort, starring Daisy Ridley and Alden Ehrenreich.
