The dinosaur film that competed with the newest Jurassic Park movie is now confirmed to be getting sequels.
The surprisingly popular Australian film Primitive War, which combined Vietnam War soldiers with dinosaurs in a jungle setting, is getting a sequel. Released just three months after Jurassic World, the low-budget movie is following up on its initial success, according to Variety.
Luke Sparke, who is directing the sequel to Primitive War, says the new film will feature even more intense action than the first. He explained that while the first movie was about finding these creatures, the second focuses on what happens when things spiral out of control – when nature evolves quicker than any army can prepare, and when the initial conflict becomes less important than the danger that’s been unleashed.
Primitive War 2 is currently in the late stages of development and is targeting a 2027 release date.
“Primitive War 2” takes the story and world-building of the series further, setting the action squarely in the Vietnam War. The film blends the realities of 1960s combat with the terrifying presence of ancient predators.
The new installment promises a more intense and grim continuation of the story, building on the series’ signature combination of realistic warfare and terrifying survival elements.
‘Primitive War 2’ picks up after the first movie, focusing on a new American platoon deployed to a dangerous and chaotic valley. They find themselves caught between deadly battlegrounds, competing predators, and hidden secrets from the Cold War.
Once the situation gets out of control, the focus shifts from controlling it to simply staying alive, and the consequences of losing will be catastrophic, reaching beyond the immediate conflict zone.
The film Primitive War had a small release in theaters in October 2025 and earned $1.2 million worldwide, despite costing about $5 million to make.
The film received generally positive reviews, earning a 65% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While some critics found it a bit cheesy, they agreed it was an enjoyable and surprisingly well-made movie, especially compared to typical low-budget action films.
People didn’t like the movie because of its poor dialogue, unbelievable plot, and lack of diversity among the actors.
A review in ScreenRant called Primitive War a surprisingly fun dinosaur movie that delivers more thrills than the Jurassic World films, all while costing significantly less to make. The review highlighted the film’s bold creativity, suggesting it could be the best dinosaur movie of 2025, even competing with the blockbuster Jurassic World Rebirth.
The newest Jurassic Park/World movie cost between $180 and $225 million to make, and earned $869 million globally. However, critics generally favored the lower-budget film Primitive War, which received a 65% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to the 50% rating for Jurassic World Rebirth.
