For horror fans, there’s always something new to discover, especially among independent films. Last year brought great movies like Bloody Axe Wound, Fréwaka, and The Ugly Stepsister, and this year looks promising too! Tomorrow, Mother of Flies premieres on AMC+ and Shudder. MovieWeb has a sneak peek clip to give you a taste of the strange and disturbing fun in this folk horror film.
The new film Mother of Flies, from the filmmaking team known as the Adams Family (Zelda Adams, John Adams, and Toby Poser), delivers the same creepy, folk-horror style fans loved in their previous films like Hellbender, Hell Hole, and Where the Devil Roams. This talented group consistently creates unique and unsettling horror, and a new clip from Mother of Flies (below) showcases their blend of gore and suspense – proving they deserve more attention.
Okay, so the movie starts rough. Like, really rough. We’re thrown right in with a super close-up of tattooed hands while someone is clearly in terrible pain – you can hear it. Then, it cuts to this guy throwing up… and it’s not pretty. Honestly, it looked like he was coughing up chunks of food, and, well, let’s just say it was disturbing. A string of snot… yeah, it was that kind of scene. It goes on and on, and I was almost ready to look away. But then the scene shifts, and he’s staring at this… truly horrifying, decaying corpse that just… stares back. The whole opening sequence is only a little over a minute long, but if that’s anything to go by, horror fans are going to love Mother of Flies. The synopsis reads:
In “Mother of Flies,” Mickey, a young woman with a life-threatening illness, ventures into the wilderness with her father to find Solveig, a secluded figure rumored to practice powerful magic. Over three days, Mickey undergoes intense and dangerous rituals led by Solveig, hoping for a cure. However, healing comes at a price, and what seems like a curse to one may be a blessing to another. As long-held secrets are revealed, the line between life and death blurs, forcing Mickey to confront unsettling truths known only to those who are dying.
‘Mother of Flies’ Is a Deeply Personal Movie for the Adams Family
Premiering last year at the Fantasia International Film Festival, Mother of Flies has quickly gained critical acclaim, currently holding a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewers have called it everything from “creepily fun” to a film “full of stunning visuals.” For the filmmaking Adams Family, the movie is also a very personal project, allowing them to delve into their own family history. They explained in a statement: “The reality is, bodies don’t last forever—sometimes they go too soon, sometimes too late, and often with pain.”
Experiences like cancer are a universal human hardship. As a family who often draws inspiration from our own lives, we knew it was only a matter of time before we confronted our history with this disease—a history shared by almost everyone. “Mother of Flies” became a way for us to take those difficult, painful stories, and reshape them into something powerful, fresh, and full of life—even though the underlying reality remains harsh.
If you enjoy analyzing stories and looking for hidden meanings, knowing the background details before watching Mother of Flies will make Mickey’s story even richer. Don’t miss this fantastic folk horror film when it premieres on AMC+ and Shudder tomorrow, January 23rd.
