Critics didn’t hold back, calling it over-the-top, and even Kim Kardashian’s divorce lawyer, Laura Wasser, pointed out that the show wasn’t realistic. But one of the biggest issues revolved around a Birkin bag used by the character Allura Grant, played by Kim Kardashian, who recently shared the story behind it and how celebrities like Ellen DeGeneres reacted.

Kim Kardashian faced criticism after being seen on a show called All’s Fair with a Hermès Birkin bag that looked like it was made from elephant skin, given her history with PETA. She later clarified on her sister Khloé’s podcast, Khloé in Wonder Land, that the bag wasn’t actually made of real elephant skin.

We bought a fake bag as an extra prop. I even have pictures – if you look closely, the hardware is installed upside down, proving it’s a complete counterfeit.

She shared that she brought several handbags from her personal Birkin collection – though it’s unknown if any of those were the exceptionally expensive ones Kris Jenner owns. In addition, there were other bags available for the actresses to coordinate with their outfits.

Okay, so about those Hermès bags… I recently read they made a very limited run back in the ’80s using elephant skin from a single animal taken on safari. Apparently, Hermès themselves never actually sold them in stores, but if you can find one on the resale market, people are paying crazy money – upwards of $125,000! It’s a really unsettling story, and PETA has rightly called attention to it.

Many people were upset, including some celebrities, to learn that Kim Kardashian and Allura Grant possessed a particular item. Ireland Baldwin publicly called it “disgusting and shameful,” while Ellen DeGeneres reportedly expressed her disapproval privately.

Honestly, it was how she brought it up that stuck with me. She messaged me, completely puzzled, about this story she’d seen featuring an elephant-skin Birkin bag and just asked, ‘What is this thing?’ It was pretty obvious to me – I immediately told her the bag was a fake.

Kim Kardashian expressed gratitude for how Ellen DeGeneres addressed the issue, reaching out to her personally and taking the time to share her perspective. Now, the actress from American Horror Story has stated she understands why people were upset by the bag, and while it was only a prop, she acknowledges it shouldn’t have been used. She continued by saying:

I was frustrated with myself for confirming the Birkin bag with the elephant on it was legitimate. There was confusion about whether it was real or a fake, and I should have handled sharing that information more carefully.

Although critics weren’t impressed, viewers loved the first season of the legal drama, quickly leading to a second season being ordered. While there’s no official release date yet, it’s likely the show will address the accessory controversy from the first season when it returns in 2026, potentially with some changes to the main character’s wardrobe.
