D4 Enterprise is slowly rolling out a Nintendo Switch version of the classic 1984 PC-8801 game, Courageous Perseus, as part of their EGG Console series. You’ll be able to download it from Nintendo eShops around the world, including the US, for $6.49.
This action RPG draws inspiration from Greek mythology. Players take on the role of Perseus, on a quest to revive the island home of the three Goddesses of Beauty. A unique feature of the game is that players can complete it in one of two ways: by collecting all 12 Zodiac items, or by finding the statues of the three Goddesses.
Below you’ll find the official trailer, screenshots, and details for the Courageous Perseus port. A similar port is also available for Windows PC through Project EGG, but accessing it requires a ¥550 monthly subscription to the EGG Service, even though it’s listed as free.
Long ago, a beautiful island in the southern sea was a flower garden where the Goddesses of Beauty – Maia, Celaeno, and Asterope – lived peacefully. But the Gorgon clan invaded, turning the lush garden into a dangerous, rocky island filled with dark moss and a powerful curse.
The Goddesses attempted to escape, entrusting the 12 Zodiac constellations to the island’s people, but the Gorgons captured them and turned them to stone, also corrupting the hearts of the residents. Their cries of sorrow reached Zeus, the great god, carried on the wind, and his tears fell as rain upon the land.
Hearing their pleas, Zeus sent the hero Perseus. Equipped with a sacred shield and sword given by Athena and Hermes, Perseus travels to the southern island to rescue the Goddesses and bring peace back to their home.
Released in 1984 by COSMOS COMPUTER, this action RPG puts you in the role of Perseus, who must rescue the Goddess of Beauty from a magical island controlled by the Gorgon.
You get stronger by defeating enemies and finding items. Like many classic action RPGs, battles happen when you directly collide with foes. You’ll need to carefully choose which enemies to fight based on your current strength and defeat them in the right order.
You can win the game by collecting all twelve Zodiac items or three Goddess statues. While it might take some getting used to, this game is a landmark title that helped establish the Japanese action RPG genre and is well worth playing.
