Crimson Desert’s Open-World Will Be Twice the Size of Skyrim

Crimson Desert, a single-player, open-world action game created by Pearl Abyss, is finished and will be released on March 19th.

Crimson Desert unfolds on the continent of Pywel, where you play as The Greymanes, a faction suddenly attacked by their longtime rivals, the Black Bears.

Those who survived are now spread out all over the land, and it’s up to you to find them and bring them back together—a task that will take you far and wide.

Crimson Desert’s Massive Open-World Launches March 19th

Will Powers of Pearl Abyss recently shared details about their upcoming game, Crimson Desert. He discussed features like dungeons and combat, as well as their new BlackSpace engine. He also revealed the game world will be massive, stating it’s at least twice the size of Skyrim’s playable area and larger than the map in Red Dead Redemption 2.

The land of Pywel will be packed with things to discover, like small settlements, grand castles, optional quests, and tough boss fights, all spread throughout the world. Luckily, you’ll be able to travel easily using dragons!

Great open-world games need a world that feels both large and full of things to do, so players don’t feel lost or bored. According to Powers, Crimson Desert has struck that perfect balance. He explains that open-world games are all about player agency and offering plenty of activities and diversions, and the team aimed to build a world that’s both huge and highly interactive.

Pywel is expected to be a vast world with many points of interest, including settlements, fortresses, optional quests, and difficult enemies to defeat, all spread throughout the game’s environment.

Pearl Abyss has created a new game engine called BlackSpace, tailored for large, open-world games. While acknowledging the quality of Unreal Engine 5, they explain that BlackSpace was specifically built to handle the demands of their ambitious game’s size and scope.
