Universal Pictures has rescheduled the release of its new Exorcist film, directed by Mike Flanagan, known for The Haunting of Hill House. Originally planned for March 13, 2026 – a Friday the 13th – the film faced production delays. Actress Scarlett Johansson will star in the reboot, reportedly choosing it over the role of Mother Gothel in Disney’s live-action Tangled and also committing to The Batman – Part II.
As a huge horror fan, I was really excited to hear that Mike Flanagan is tackling The Exorcist! Universal Pictures just announced it’s coming out on March 12, 2027, according to Variety. And the cast is fantastic – Scarlett Johansson and Noah Jupe, who I thought was brilliant in Hamnet, are both signed on. Flanagan’s not just directing, he’s writing and producing too, which is awesome. They’re keeping plot details pretty close to the vest, but it sounds like he’s doing a really interesting, dramatic take on the story.
‘The Exorcist’ vs. Jesus as the Easter Box Office

Universal
Universal Pictures is trying to get the Exorcist movies back on track after The Exorcist: Believer didn’t perform well with audiences. The studio invested $400 million for the rights to release a new trilogy, starting with Believer. They’ve brought in the same team that successfully rebooted the Halloween franchise – director David Gordon Green and writers Scott Teems and Danny McBride – to lead this new effort.
I was really excited for The Exorcist: Believer when it came out in theaters on October 6, 2023, but honestly, it didn’t live up to the hype. Even though it made $137 million worldwide on a $30 million budget, most critics and fans didn’t like it. They were already planning a sequel, The Exorcist: Deceiver, for April 2025, but Universal Pictures decided to put that on hold. Then, in May 2024, they announced that Mike Flanagan was coming on board to basically start fresh with the Exorcist franchise, which means the original trilogy plans are off the table. It’s a shame, because apparently Flanagan taking on The Exorcist meant he had to step away from directing a Clayface movie he’d pitched for DC, based on the Batman villain!

Next year’s movie schedule is shaping up to be packed. The reboot of The Exorcist will be released alongside a new animated film from Sony Pictures called Buds. The week before, audiences can look forward to Pixar’s Gatto and a remake of The Thomas Crown Affair from Amazon MGM, directed by and starring Michael B. Jordan. March 2027 will also bring Sonic the Hedgehog 4 on the 19th, and then Godzilla X Kong: Supernova and The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One at the end of the month, coinciding with Easter. Interestingly, The Resurrection of the Christ and The Exorcist will be playing in theaters around the same time.
