This summer, news about Subnautica 2 has been overshadowed by a dispute between its publisher, Krafton, and the former leaders of the game’s developer, Unknown Worlds. Charlie Cleveland, Max McGuire, and CEO Ted Gill were removed from their positions and have since sued Krafton, claiming the company is trying to avoid paying them a $250 million bonus. Recently, Krafton altered its explanation for why this leadership team was let go.
PC Gamer reports that Krafton initially claimed the creators of Subnautica 2 rushed the game into early access before it was finished, allegedly to earn performance bonuses. However, during legal proceedings, lawyers for the creators at Fortis Advisors requested evidence of this claim, which Krafton failed to provide. As a result, Krafton has since dropped this argument from their lawsuit. Fortis Advisors described this change as a significant development and expressed some confusion over Krafton’s initial assertion.
Krafton continues to claim the original creators didn’t fulfill their duties to finish Subnautica 2, and also alleges they took confidential files and equipment. While this information surfaced after the team was replaced, Krafton believes it proves their decision to remove the original leadership was justified.
Fortis claims Krafton isn’t fully participating in the legal discovery process, specifically by not responding to requests for meetings or relevant information. However, both companies have now agreed to discuss the matter and share information.
While legal issues could take years to resolve, the public debate has already started. Fans threatened to boycott the upcoming game, Subnautica 2, after news surfaced that a $250 million bonus was being delayed. Bloomberg reports that Krafton has now extended the timeframe for earning the bonus into next year, giving the development team at Unknown Worlds a better opportunity to reach their financial goals and share a $25 million portion amongst themselves. The remaining $225 million was originally intended for former leaders who have since left the company.
Subnautica 2 is expected to hit early access in 2026 on PC and Xbox Series X|S.
