The trailer for season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters suggests that fans disappointed with the current direction of the Monsterverse have reason to be optimistic about 2026. The Apple TV+ show returns with its second season in late February, and this time around, it will feature both Godzilla and Kong, alongside a new monster called Titan X.
The next installment of the Monarch series appears to be a shift in tone from recent Godzilla movies. Legendary’s films have increasingly focused on over-the-top action and humor – think robotic Godzillas, Kong with mechanical arms, and even Godzilla seemingly enjoying the chaos. This new series seems to be heading in a different direction.
This isn’t to say the Monsterverse is betraying what makes Godzilla special. The original Japanese Godzilla films, particularly those from the 60s and 70s, explored similar territory. However, this direction feels different from what the Monsterverse initially promised, and some fans aren’t thrilled about the change.
Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters Season 2 Promises To Be More Like Godzilla 2014
As a big fan of the Monsterverse, I really appreciated how Monarch: Legacy of Monsters switched things up when it came out in 2023. After the first Godzilla movie, it felt good to get back to a story focused on the characters, with a more serious vibe, and monster action that really emphasized just how huge these Titans are – all seen through the eyes of the people dealing with them. From what I’ve seen in the trailer, Season 2 looks like it’s building on that even more, and it’s seriously exciting!
The image features a whale swimming in the ocean, with the strange, squid-like Titan X positioned above it. Including the whale is a smart move, as the size difference powerfully illustrates just how enormous Titan X is. This visual style is very similar to the impressive way Gareth Edwards showed Godzilla and the MUTOs in his 2014 film.
The movie Godzilla expertly built anticipation for the monster’s first appearance. It showed Godzilla’s massive foot crushing everything, instantly stopping the crowd’s panicked screams, and then slowly revealed the full, enraged creature just before its powerful roar. This impactful moment was a key reason why Godzilla received so many positive reviews – something rarely seen with films about giant monsters.
Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters Is Only A Temporary Break From The Monsterverse’s Current Approach

The trailer for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 features imagery – like the Titan X scene, its dark atmosphere, and a shot of Kong’s foot – that seems to echo the 2014 Godzilla movie. However, this doesn’t mean the Monsterverse is heading in that direction overall.
With its over-the-top style, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire did well in theaters, proving that audiences enjoy this type of monster movie. The next film, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, is already being promoted as a direct continuation, and with the villain being SpaceGodzilla, it’s clear the Monsterverse isn’t planning a return to more serious or grounded storytelling.
