Despite Not Being Firmly a Horror Movie, Zodiac Has One of the Most Horrific Scenes on Film
The movie Zodiac blends genres a bit too much overall. However, one scene is genuinely terrifying – it’s considered so frightening that it was included in Shudder’s 101 Scariest Horror Movie Moments documentary.
The movie primarily follows the investigation into the Zodiac killings that took place in 1968 and 1969, and doesn’t show much of the violence of the crimes. Because of this, the one extremely graphic scene depicting the Zodiac killer attacking a couple by a lake is particularly shocking.
A couple peacefully picnicking is suddenly terrorized when a violent stranger appears. He forces them to restrain each other before brutally stabbing them, making them witness each other’s suffering. This shocking scene is incredibly impactful due to its realistic depiction and stark contrast to the rest of the film. It showcases director Fincher’s skill in blending elements from different genres, demonstrating his versatility as a filmmaker.
Movie Lovers Are Finally Realizing How Timeless Zodiac Is, Almost Two Decades After its Release
Despite not doing well in theaters when it was first released, David Fincher’s Zodiac has recently gained popularity thanks to being available on various streaming services, most recently on Netflix. This consistent streaming presence has introduced the film to a new generation of viewers.
The Zodiac Killer case remains famous, with the FBI long suspecting Arthur Leigh Allen. Even after more than fifty years, new details continue to surface, fueling interest in film adaptations. Much like the unsolved case itself, the unsettling and ambiguous ending of the movie Zodiac encourages viewers to rewatch, searching for clues and answers that have evaded both investigators and true crime enthusiasts for decades.
As a big Fincher fan, I think what he does so well, and Zodiac is a perfect example, is letting the story unfold without forcing a specific viewpoint on you. It doesn’t really lean heavily into one genre, which makes it accessible to pretty much anyone. Honestly, I think that’s why Zodiac holds up so well over time, and it’s easily his best work – it really deserves more attention, in my opinion.
