Jojo Moyes’s novel, Me Before You, which was also made into a movie, tells a moving love story. It follows Louisa, or Lou, a young woman whose life takes an unexpected turn when she becomes a caregiver and companion to a wealthy man who is paralyzed. The story beautifully portrays the development of their relationship, from friendship to romance, while also thoughtfully examining themes of independence and dealing with loss.
Although the novel Me Before You is highly rated on Goodreads with a score of 4.26 out of 5, the film adaptation received mixed reviews. Critics gave it a ‘Rotten’ score of 55%, while audiences were somewhat more positive, giving it 73%.
Although the film’s initial scores weren’t great, it’s now the third most-watched movie on Netflix, which shows it’s actually been a big hit. Having both read the book and seen the movie, I definitely think “Me Before You” deserves its place in the top three.
I’m Calling It: Critics Were Embarrassingly Wrong About Me Before You
Me Before You Is Based on a Novel by Jojo Moyes
I first saw this movie during my senior year of high school when it started streaming, and I enjoyed it so much that I immediately bought the book. I rarely buy books based on movies, and haven’t since, which really shows how much I loved the film.
I found the story’s idea incredibly original, and both Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin were fantastic – they truly lived up to their reputations as top actors. The movie genuinely moved me, making me feel a whole range of emotions, which is always a sign I’ll love it. Even though the book is better, as is often the case with adaptations, it didn’t lessen my enjoyment of the film at all – in fact, it made me appreciate it even more.
I really enjoyed the movie, giving it an 8.5 out of 10 as a romantic drama. So, I was shocked to see its Rotten Tomatoes score – it was labeled ‘Rotten’ with only a 55% rating from critics. It honestly made me question if we even watched the same film!
Many critics didn’t like the movie when it first came out, but it’s now gaining popularity ten years later – proving them wrong, in my opinion. Its increasing fanbase suggests it’s actually much better than its current 55% rating. If you haven’t seen Me Before You and are looking for a deeply emotional experience, I recommend checking it out – or even better, reading the book – despite what the critics say.
