7 Biggest Bone Temple Questions That The Next 28 Years Later Movie Needs To Resolve

Be warned, this contains spoilers for 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. The film leaves the future of the series wide open, with the destinies of characters like Spike, Samson, and the world itself uncertain. While The Bone Temple does resolve the danger presented by Sir Jimmy (though Dr. Kelson doesn’t survive), it also sets up a confrontation between Spike and Kelly with a character named Jim.

Director Danny Boyle has confirmed a third film is in the works, but it’s still unclear what the story will be about. Considering the many surprising twists and unresolved storylines in this recent film, fans will likely be eager for answers in the next 28 Years Later movie.

What Will Samson Do Now That He’s Been Cured Of The Rage Virus?

One of the main questions left after 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is what happens to Samson, the Alpha who Kelson manages to cure of the Rage Virus. Despite being initially consumed by the virus, Samson forms a connection with Kelson and shares a touching final moment with him before he dies.

If Samson can prove he’s truly recovered, he has the potential to change everything, particularly because he doesn’t seem to get sick again. His blood could be critical to saving humanity and stopping the spread of the Rage Virus in England, potentially allowing the country to rejoin the global community.

Changing things could make him a major target for anyone who benefited from the previous situation and wants to maintain it. It’s also possible people won’t even believe he’s fixed things. This could lead to a really exciting third movie, where Samson’s destiny decides the fate of the world.

Will Anyone Find Kelson’s Cure?

A key plot twist in The Bone Temple is Kelson’s finding a cure for the Rage Virus that surprisingly keeps the positive physical changes it caused. This is a major breakthrough because it could potentially heal many people and help rebuild England to its former state.

Kelson’s sudden death could prevent society from rebuilding, even though his research still exists. It’s probably locked away in his hidden bunker beneath the Bone Temple, and most people don’t even know it’s there. This means there’s a real chance his cure will never be discovered.

A future installment in the series could explore the connection between Spike and Samson. If Spike learns about Samson, he might share information about Kelson’s discoveries. This could then make finding Kelson’s research a central focus of the next movie.

How Will Spike And Kelly Get Along With Jim?

The story of The Bone Temple concludes with Spike and Kelly (who used to be known as Jimmy Ink) running from a large group of infected, and being spotted by Jim and his daughter, Sam. Jim and Sam race to help, suggesting these two pairs will be central characters if there’s a sequel. A key question remains: how will these two groups get along with each other?

In the next installment, Sam and Spike could become close, potentially even developing a friendship or romance given their similar ages. However, Jim’s naturally cautious personality might lead him to remain wary of Spike and Kelly, even after rescuing them.

If Jim found out about the things Kelly did while she was with the Jimmys, he might not want to be with her. This could create a lot of conflict in the next movie, which seems to be about people dealing with difficult pasts and trying to overcome their mistakes.

What Happened To Selena And Hannah?

As a huge fan of the 28 Days Later universe, I was thrilled to see Jim back – it really connects the original film to everything that came after. But his return also got me thinking about what happened to the other key survivors, especially Selena and Hannah. I always found their story so compelling; Selena was the very first person Jim teamed up with, and their relationship developed so naturally throughout the movie.

Hannah, having survived the initial outbreak with her father, offered shelter to Jim and Selena. As they journeyed together, Hannah depended on Jim and Selena when her father fell ill. The film 28 Days Later concluded with the three of them finding refuge in a secluded area of England, and it’s to this same location that 28 Years Later brings Jim back.

Sam looks so much like Selena that it strongly implies Selena and Jim are her parents. However, the movie 28 Years Later doesn’t explain what happened to Selena, or to Hannah. They might still be somewhere on the grounds, out running errands, or they could have died or become infected. A future movie would need to clarify their fates.

Where Does Cathy Go?

A key question in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is what happens to Cathy, the pregnant woman the Jimmys find. Although Sir Jimmy and his group kill the rest of her family, Cathy manages to escape, partly because Spike hesitates and can’t bring himself to kill her.

Honestly, the way the movie ends with Cathy running off into the woods feels like a setup for another film. It definitely leaves the door open for her return, and I can already see how that could cause major problems for Spike and Kelly. If she ever figures out who they are, she could easily turn everyone against them, portraying them as the real villains for chasing after Jimmy.

It’s possible Cathy is connected to Jim or Spike’s family, and could influence how they view Spike’s choices. The idea of Cathy causing trouble for Spike is so interesting that it feels essential to explore further in a future story.

What’s Going On With Jamie?

Although The Bone Temple primarily follows Spike and Kelson, it doesn’t include Jamie’s storyline at all. Jamie, Spike’s father, was last seen searching for his son while also caring for the infected woman’s daughter. He could play a significant and flexible role in a future installment, potentially fitting into many different parts of the story.

Jamie might have returned to his life in the wilderness, searching for Spike and hoping to bring him back. This situation could easily cause conflict between Jamie and Jim, perhaps through a misunderstanding, or it could bring them together as allies. Alternatively, Jamie may have stayed home to care for his adopted daughter and protect the town.

Jamie might ask Cathy for information about Spike and then decide to track him down and return him. This could even lead to a confrontation with Samson, particularly if the former leader learns that Samson’s possible child is living with Jamie’s group. All of this sets the stage for the next installment, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.
