Everyone remembers the main cast of Scrubs – Zach Braff, Donald Faison, Sarah Chalke, and the rest – as being incredibly funny. But the show also relied on memorable supporting characters, and Ted Buckley, played by the late Sam Lloyd, was a perfect example. It’s especially sad that Lloyd won’t be in the upcoming Scrubs revival, but Zach Braff has revealed a heartwarming way the show will pay tribute to his former colleague.
Sam Lloyd, best known for his role on Scrubs, sadly passed away in 2020 at age 56 after battling a brain tumor and lung cancer. Zach Braff recently shared with Esquire that the show’s upcoming revival will honor Lloyd by naming one of its new locations after him, which will undoubtedly be a touching tribute for fans like myself.
We’ve started going to a new bar on set and affectionately call it Lloyd’s Tavern – a lovely idea from our production designer as a tribute to Sam, who we all miss dearly. He was a hugely important part of our team, and it’s been difficult working without him. We’re planning an episode dedicated to his memory, though we’re still deciding whether it will air in the first nine episodes or sometime during season two.
It’s touching to see the new Scrubs revival acknowledge Sam Lloyd, the actor who played Ted, who sadly passed away. It reminds me of how the Frasier reboot named their bar Mahoney’s in honor of John Mahoney, who played Martin Crane. Hopefully, the revival will dedicate a full episode to Lloyd and his character, either this season or in a potential second season.

Sam Lloyd first appeared as Ted Buckland in the very first episode of Scrubs, which aired on October 2, 2001. He played the unlucky lawyer, often teased by Dr. Kelso, in 95 episodes throughout the show’s nine seasons. Lloyd also reprised his role as Ted in three episodes of Cougar Town, another series created by Bill Lawrence. Lawrence is currently working on Apple TV+ shows like Ted Lasso, Shrinking, and Sugar, but he’s still involved with the Scrubs revival as an executive producer. Aseem Batra is the showrunner for the revival.
Zach Braff, Donald Faison, and Sarah Chalke will star in the new Scrubs revival. John C. McGinley, Judy Reyes, Robert Maschio, and Phill Lewis, who all appeared in the original series, will return in recurring roles. New cast members include Vanessa Bayer, Joel Kim Booster, Ava Bunn, Jacob Dudman, David Gridley, Layla Mohammadi, and Amanda Morrow. The revival premieres on ABC with two episodes on Wednesday, February 25th.
