The new Game of Thrones prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is coming out this week! Here’s everything you need to know about when and where to watch, and what the show is about.

Written by George R.R. Martin, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a fantasy series set in the world of Game of Thrones, taking place between the stories of House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones itself.

Currently, the HBO show has an 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In our review, we noted that once the series gets going, its purpose becomes clear, and it delivers a satisfying experience. While not perfect, ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ is an enjoyable story about honor, faithfulness, and the qualities of a true knight.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms release date & time

The new series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, will premiere on HBO Max on January 18, 2026, at 7 PM Eastern Time and 10 PM Pacific Time. Viewers in the UK can watch it on Sky or Now TV.

What happens in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms?

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes place a hundred years before the story of Game of Thrones. It follows the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall, a brave but inexperienced knight, and his small squire, Egg, as they travel across Westeros.

Long ago, when the Targaryen family still ruled Westeros and people remembered the last dragons, a group of unlikely friends found themselves facing incredible challenges, powerful enemies, and thrilling adventures.

Our review of TopMob explained that the HBO series is based on George R.R. Martin’s “Tales of Dunk and Egg” novellas. Season 1 specifically covers the events of “The Hedge Knight,” fitting the show chronologically between “House of the Dragon” and “Game of Thrones” as a sequel and prequel, respectively.

I’m so excited about this new series! It all kicks off with Ser Duncan the Tall – everyone calls him Dunk, and he’s played by Peter Claffey. He’s this massive, really gentle knight who finds himself on his own after his previous master, Ser Arlan of Pennytree (Danny Webb), passes away. To try and make a name for himself, Dunk decides to compete in a tournament at a place called Ashford Meadow.

Throughout their journey, Dunk gains a loyal companion named Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell), who believes in Dunk’s potential even more than Dunk does himself. The relationship between them is the emotional core of the series, and it’s guaranteed to evoke a strong reaction – you’ll likely find yourself laughing, crying, or feeling deeply moved.
