James Gunn is a big fan of comic books and superheroes, but he isn’t afraid to make changes to established storylines. As he builds the new DCU, he’s updating some characters and their backgrounds to put a fresh spin on things. For example, the series *Peacemaker* alters the origin story of a Batman character, a bold move that might hint at future developments in the Dark Knight’s history within the DCU.
Comic book fans were particularly excited about the character of Sasha Bordeaux when the cast for Peacemaker Season 2 was revealed. Bordeaux first appeared in Detective Comics #751 back in 2000 as a former Secret Service agent who became a bodyguard. She was originally hired by the Wayne Enterprises board to protect Bruce Wayne, but she quickly figured out that he was secretly Batman.
Wayne hesitantly agreed to train Bordeaux, and she began fighting crime alongside him as his partner. However, they were both falsely accused of murdering radio host Vesper Fairchild. Batman eventually cleared their names, but Bordeaux seemingly died in prison before she could be freed.
Bordeaux didn’t actually die; her ‘murder’ was staged by the secret organization Checkmate as a way to bring her into their ranks. She was then turned into a cyborg by Maxwell Lord. After Lord’s fall from power, Bordeaux took control of Checkmate and developed a romantic relationship with Mister Terrific. Currently, in the main DC storyline, she remains a cyborg and now works with the government agency ARGUS.
Sol Rodriguez, who plays the character Bordeaux, was asked if her character’s history as a comic book figure would influence her performance in the second season of *Peacemaker*. Rodriguez admitted she considered that background, but is also creating her own unique interpretation of the character. She also expressed enthusiasm about potentially leading Checkmate or ARGUS in the future, saying she’s ready if creator James Gunn decides to go in that direction.
How Peacemaker Season 2 changes Sasha Bordeaux for DCU
Okay, so episode 5 of ‘Peacemaker’ – ‘Back to the Suture’ – really threw me for a loop, but in a good way. It seems James Gunn and the team are pulling directly from the comics with Sasha Bordeaux’s character! During that intense park ambush, when things went south and it was a standoff, Sasha didn’t hesitate. She pulled her gun, confidently stated she could take Peacemaker out, and *then* we got this really cool shot – blue lights flared in her eyes and we saw the world from her perspective, complete with a targeting system. It’s a clear nod to her comic book background and it was a genuinely exciting moment – it definitely suggests we’re going to see more of her abilities come into play!
Okay, so we learn a lot about Sasha Bordeaux in Peacemaker! Economos at ARGUS straight-up calls her a cyborg, and the story is pretty intense. Apparently, she was in a plane crash and ARGUS rebuilt half of her body with machines. They haven’t given us any details about her life *before* the crash, which is a little frustrating, but the abilities we see her use in the show actually line up with what she can do in the comics after she joins Checkmate. It’s cool to see that consistency, even with the mystery surrounding her past.
Could Peacemaker Season 2 tease DCU Batman?
So far, details about the new Batman in the DC Universe (DCU) are limited. He made a brief appearance in the animated series *Creature Commandos*, where he apprehended Doctor Phosphorus. James Gunn, on *Peacemaker: The Official Podcast*, also stated that Batman is a public figure. Despite this, many characters, including Peacemaker, have questioned Batman’s strict rule against killing supervillains, especially those who repeatedly break free and continue to harm others.
The new DC Universe version of Batman might share a past with Sasha Bordeaux, just like in the comics. But, the changes made to her story in the *Peacemaker* series could have been done to separate her from Batman. It’s even possible Batman won’t play any role in the *Peacemaker* story at all.
James Gunn has made the rare decision not to share the last three episodes of Peacemaker Season 2 with TV critics in advance. He told Brandon Davis he’s worried about spoilers leaking before the episodes air, though it’s not clear why these particular episodes are so sensitive. When asked by Extra if the new DC Universe Batman might appear in Season 2, Gunn just smiled and said, “We’ll see.”
