Okay, so I just read this crazy story, and it’s really messed up. Apparently, an 11-year-old kid in China was doing homework for *fourteen hours straight* without even taking a break! It got so bad he ended up in the hospital with his hands all cramped up – they called it ‘chicken claw hands’ – and he was having trouble breathing too. Seriously, fourteen hours? That’s insane, and it just shows how much pressure kids are under sometimes.
In August, a boy named Liangliang was pushed by his parents to study for fourteen hours each day, from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. By 11 p.m., he began experiencing symptoms of extreme stress, including fast breathing, numb hands and feet, and dizziness.
According to the SCMP, the boy had even developed “claw-like” chicken hands and muscle stiffness.
His parents took him to the hospital after he began having trouble breathing. Doctors determined he was hyperventilating, a condition where rapid, deep breaths cause a range of symptoms like chest pain, finger tingling, and muscle stiffness. This was brought on by emotional stress, and without treatment, it could have been very dangerous.
Doctors said Liangliang gradually recovered once his breathing was regulated.

Too much homework?
In August, Changsha Central Hospital saw a dramatic increase in teenagers experiencing symptoms like those of a patient named Liangliang – over 30 cases, which is ten times the usual number for that time of year.
A 2017 study by the British Council found that many Chinese students keep studying hard even during their summer breaks, after the regular school year finishes in July.
This situation is part of a larger worldwide discussion about whether or not students should have homework. In North America, well-known figures like Kim Kardashian have publicly criticized it, even telling livestreamer Kai Cenat that she thinks homework isn’t beneficial for children.
She pointed out that children spend eight hours a day at school, and after that, they have commitments like sports, family time, and just being kids. Because of this, she believes homework should be done during the school day.
Recently, some students have found fun and imaginative ways to complete their schoolwork. For example, in 2024, a young fan of the video game Tekken wrote an essay about it that became very popular online, earning positive attention from the fighting game community due to its delightful style.
