It’s The Final Countdown For Anthem, With Only One Week Left To Play

If you still want to play Anthem, BioWare’s online game, you have only a week left. Electronic Arts will shut down the game’s servers on January 12th, making it unplayable after that date.

EA has confirmed that Anthem will no longer be playable after July 2025. Players have about six months to revisit the game and use any remaining in-game credits. While Eurogamer is investigating, it doesn’t seem likely there will be a special event to mark the game’s shutdown.

Following the recent announcement, Mark Darrah, a former producer at BioWare, shared his perspective on what caused the issues with Anthem. He explained that Casey Hudson, who directed Mass Effect, originally presented Anthem to EA as a way for BioWare to move in a new direction. However, Hudson left BioWare before he could guide that change. He’s currently leading the team developing the new Star Wars game, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic.

Darrah also explained that Anthem was destined to become unplayable eventually, no matter how well it did. He said that’s simply how live-service games tend to work.

BioWare had planned a large update to reboot the game Anthem, but those plans were cancelled when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Now, the studio is working on Mass Effect 5, though it’s currently a much smaller team – with fewer than 100 employees remaining.
