Facebook is now sending payments to people in the U.S. who used the site between 2007 and 2022 as part of a settlement regarding how their data was handled.
It’s really important to keep your personal information safe online, whether you’re using social media or other websites. Almost every site now asks for your permission to use your data, usually through a pop-up or button.
During the 2010s, Cambridge Analytica gathered personal information from Facebook users without their permission. This data was then used in political advertising campaigns.
Meta, the company that owns Facebook, reached a $725 million settlement in 2022 for a lawsuit that began in 2018. After nearly three years, the people involved in the case are now receiving their share of the money.
Facebook is paying out to longtime US users
People in the U.S. who used Facebook between 2007 and 2022 had until August 25th to submit a claim to receive money from a recent settlement.
Recent reports show the average payment is about $30, though some people have received as little as $3. The total amount being distributed is $541 million, but $180 million will first go to cover legal fees, with the remainder used for administrative expenses.
The amount you receive is based on a points system that tracks how consistently you logged into Facebook during a specific timeframe. However, the number of points you earn won’t directly translate to your payout – simply logging in a certain number of times doesn’t mean you’ll receive a corresponding dollar amount.

As previously mentioned, the deadline to join the class action lawsuit was August 25th. You can’t sign up now and expect to receive money. Be careful of any scams related to this, as they may appear.
