The creators of Hollow Knight: Silksong, Team Cherry, have responded to worries about the game’s difficulty, explaining that players will always have options and different ways to progress.
Hollow Knight fans waited eight long years for Silksong, and now they’re facing a series of incredibly challenging bosses. Like the first game, Silksong is a huge Metroidvania with tons of optional things to discover and complete, but it’s definitely a tough game!
This game is more challenging than its predecessor, with long journeys back to boss battles, unpredictable enemy attacks, and demanding platforming sections. It’s proven so difficult that some players are already using modifications to lower enemy damage, even at the beginning of the game.
Team Cherry hasn’t said much publicly since their game came out, but recent comments from a gaming event in Melbourne, Australia, have revealed more about why they made the game so challenging.
Silksong devs address game’s difficulty
At a preview of ACMI’s new gaming exhibit, TopMob got a look at Silksong, which was a major focus. While the exhibit included beautiful artwork and playable demos, a book sold alongside it shared previously unknown details about the game’s development.

Jini Maxwell, a co-curator for Game Worlds, recently interviewed Ari Gibson and William Pellen from Team Cherry, and their discussion centered largely around the concept of difficulty in games.
Gibson explained that developing Silksong has proven more complex than creating the first game, but this is intentional – it’s all about giving players more options and freedom.
What’s really important to us is giving players the freedom to explore however they want. Some might stick closely to the main story, while others can wander off and discover hidden content and alternative paths.
Silksong can be quite challenging at times, but giving players more freedom to explore means they always have options for where to go and what to do.
If you’re stuck on a tough boss, the developers aren’t necessarily worried. According to Gibson, players have options to make things easier – they can explore for helpful items, learn the boss’s patterns, or even find ways to avoid the fight altogether, instead of hitting a dead end.

Silksong devs explain why game is harder than original Hollow Knight
If you’re familiar with both games, you’ll immediately notice how much Silksong has evolved. It features completely new ways to move with Hornet, plus tools and weapons you can improve, and a full quest system – all things that weren’t in Hollow Knight.
So, the developers told us they had to tweak the enemies too, to make sure everything felt balanced with all the other changes they were making. It just didn’t feel right otherwise!
According to Gibson, Hornet is naturally quicker and more adept than the Knight, so even the simplest enemies needed to be challenging and clever.
“The basic ant warrior is built from the same move-set as the original Hornet boss,” Pellen added.
The basic moves – running, jumping, and lunging – are still there, but now you can also dodge and parry attacks. Unlike the enemies in the Knight’s world, Hornet’s enemies need more tools to stop her when she tries to escape.
Instead of making Hornet weaker, the developers decided to make the other characters and challenges as difficult as she is.
