The Curse of Rigel is the newest addition to Wartales, introducing a new region to explore called Weald, unique units that can transform, and in-depth investigation quests. This expansion takes place in the challenging northern lands of Alazaar and feels like a completely separate game within Wartales. However, the complex quests and new features can be overwhelming. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know to successfully complete the Curse of Rigel expansion with ease.
How to Start the Curse of Rigel Questline
To start the new downloadable content, journey to Rigel County, which is in the northwestern part of Drombach, in the Kingdom of Alazaar. Rigel County is designed for players level 12-15, so it’s best to be at that level before going. Once you arrive in Rigel, make your way to the Edelweiss Inn – that’s where the main story begins.
I’m really excited about the new NPCs coming with this expansion, especially Captain Osweld of the King’s Knights! From what I’ve heard, you’ll first chat with him, and then team up to fight some Lycanthropes. That’s where the main story begins – tracking down what’s causing this curse that’s spreading all over Rigel. It sounds like a great way to jump into the action!
How to Get Lantern in Wartales
You’ll need the Lantern to explore the Weald, which is a dangerous, cursed forest area. Once you’ve made progress in the main story and helped Captain Osweld at King Knight’s Camp, talk to Head Surgeon Magnus.
This starts the Lantern quest. Next, you’ll need to talk to Smith Hedheida. She’ll make the Lantern for you after you investigate a nearby mine and deal with some Lycanthropes. Once you finish that, you’ll get the Lantern and a little Lantern Oil, which will allow you to explore the Weald and the Field Laboratory.
How to Get Lantern Fuel
Lantern Fuel, or Lantern Oil, is used up as you explore the Weald. If your lantern runs out, your group’s sanity will quickly decrease, ultimately making you leave the forest.
You can get Lantern Oil in a couple of ways. You can either make it yourself at the Field Laboratory using materials found in the Weald, or you can buy it from Edua the Witch at her hut in the Weald. If you’ve unlocked the Field Laboratory, you can craft Lantern Oil at the Workshop using 1 Grease and 1 Hosberg Nuts.
How to Get Gloworm Larvae
Gloworm Larvae are uncommon items found only in the Weald. You need them to make Lantern Oil and improve your Field Laboratory. They appear randomly as you explore, and you’ll find more if you explore with a dimly lit or unlit Lantern – though this is riskier. Each time you find one, you’ll get between one and three larvae. Because finding them is based on chance, the best way to collect them is to keep exploring the Weald.
All Map Locations (POIs) in the County of Rigel
Rigel is a vast region filled with interesting places connected to stories, tasks, and history. However, the Weald area doesn’t offer maps or guidance. Here are some important locations you’ll need to remember:
- Hosberg (Capital)
- Alor Town
- Munden Town
- Rigel Castle
- Rigel Prison
- Rigel Tomb
You can also find side quests at locations like the Edelweiss Inn, Witch’s Hut, Abandoned Mine, Trackers’ Camp, Sommer’s Refuge, Frozen Glade, and Rigel Stables. Each of these places offers unique quests, characters, or opportunities to craft and trade, all of which can help you advance in the game.
How to Navigate Weald in Wartales
As a huge fan of Rigel, I can tell you the Weald is seriously intense! It’s this forest area unique to the game, and it’s really dangerous – it can actually mess with your character’s sanity. Your lantern is everything when you’re in there. It controls how well you can see, what kind of stuff you find, and even what enemies you’ll face and how they act. Keeping it lit is super important because it helps protect your sanity and keeps the baddies away, but it might mean you miss out on some of the best loot. Here’s what I’ve learned about surviving it:
- Always follow a complete map. As mentioned before, you don’t get a compass or directions while in the Weald. Random exploration wastes a ton of resources, so follow a complete map when in the Weald.
- Always carry more than 10 Lantern Fuel. As you explore deeper, you will burn through a lot of Lantern Oil. A common beginner mistake is having 4-5 Lantern fuel and running out mid exploration, thus losing a lot of loot and time.
- Avoid hostile encounters. When in the Weald, more often than not you will see a red silhouette following you, which are hostile Lycanthope. Always avoid fighting them unless you can’t at all.
- Carry 4-5 Partial Lycanthope Remedy. You can get the recipe from the NPC in the Weald. This will help you avoid your main teammates from turning into Werewolves by mistake.
Keep in mind that venturing through the darkness improves your chances of finding loot, like Gloworm Larvae, but it also makes your troops vulnerable to ambushes and can negatively impact their mental state. If a character’s sanity drops to zero, your entire party will be forced to leave the Weald.
Field Laboratory Guide for Wartales
You’ll gain access to the Field Laboratory after you get the Lantern. This is where you’ll do most of Rigel’s research. You can use materials you find – like Grafts and things from the Weald – to conduct Scientific Research there.
Improving your laboratory gives you lasting benefits like better Lanterns, new crafting recipes, and the ability to research and develop Lycanthrope-related abilities. Each upgrade needs rare items found in the Weald and takes one day of rest, so it’s important to plan these improvements between your adventures.
Lycanthropes – How to Find, Recruit, and Train
Throughout the main story and some side quests in Rigel, you’ll encounter Lycanthropes. Standard Lycanthropes can be captured with Rope, but the stronger Hypertrophied Lycanthropes need Chains. Once captured, these units can transform and are known for their high damage and speed.
How to Recruit and Build Thaumaturge in Wartales
The Thaumaturge is a special class available only with the DLC, and it excels at controlling the battlefield and working well with others. You can add a Thaumaturge to your party by meeting them through factions, turning an existing companion into one, or starting a new DLC campaign with one already included. Plus, you can earn unique, powerful gear specifically for this class at Afrid’s Arena in the Weald.
How to Complete Pony Quest in Wartales
The Pony quest in Rigel asks you to find three missing ponies. You’ll find one near the Woodcutters’ Camp, another below the Frozen Lake, and the last one somewhere between Sommer’s Refuge, Tules Rock, and the Brotherhood Training Grounds. Once you’ve found all three and brought them back, you’ll finish the quest and advance the main storyline.
How to Complete the Ludern Tomb Puzzle in Wartales
The Rigel Tomb is a challenging quest in this downloadable content, known for its complex fire puzzles. At the beginning, you’ll encounter riddles on stone pillars. The final puzzle involves a mural with several fireplaces – you only need to light the ones highlighted in yellow. The solution to the six-fireplace puzzle is to activate them in the sequence 10-01-10, which will open the last room.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Is the Curse of Rigel DLC worth playing mid-campaign?
Yes, but entering at level 12 or higher is strongly recommended due to difficulty spikes.
The storyline ultimately reveals the smith in Alor Town as the origin of the curse.
No, but reaching zero mental health forces you out of the forest and wastes resources.
