Following The Game Awards 2025, everyone is still talking about the next game from Larian Studios. After showing off the first trailer, the developers are excited to share more details. They’ve confirmed that their next project will be a turn-based RPG. Swen Vincke has given some hints about the story and how development is going, but it seems we won’t see the new Divinity game until after 2026.
Baldur’s Gate 3 creators once again focus on turn-based gameplay
Larian Studios intends to build on the game development techniques they’ve refined over the last ten years. Their new game, like the Divinity series, will leverage all their accumulated experience, but Swen Vincke, the CEO, emphasizes that it won’t simply be a copy of Divinity: Original Sin II. Players can expect a high degree of freedom, combining different actions to achieve the best results. Similar to Baldur’s Gate III, the environment will likely play a key tactical role, allowing you to use things like fire and electricity to your advantage. The game’s systems are designed to be intuitive to learn, but offer significant depth for those who want to truly master them.
The game’s mechanics feel like a natural fit, considering the company’s recent focus. Back in August, a Reddit user pointed out that the studio was hiring a combat designer for its UK office, and they specifically wanted someone with experience in turn-based games.
Swen Vincke: “We are finishing the second year of production”
The team behind the new Divinity game has been very discreet about its development, but it appears to be progressing well. The project has been underway for two years and has moved beyond the planning stages – they’ve even started casting actors. Considering the success of games like Baldur’s Gate III and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, the developers recognize how crucial strong voice acting is. They’ve already begun inviting actors to record their lines at six studios in Guildford.
It’s too soon to say when the game might be released, but 2027 seems like the earliest possible timeframe. Swen Vincke believes that developing a game over three to four years leads to a better outcome. While Baldur’s Gate III took six years to finish – a process complicated by the COVID-19 pandemic and other issues – the team is thinking about releasing Divinity as an Early Access title, though they haven’t committed to that plan yet.
So, the developers are really trying to speed up how we make games, and they’re looking at AI to help. Honestly, a lot of us are already using it – I’m talking about quickly brainstorming ideas, putting together pitches, making rough concept art, or even just filling in text for testing. But the big thing is, it hasn’t actually made things faster yet. We’re still doing all the work ourselves, it’s just a tool we’re playing around with right now.
Plot
Larian Studios’ upcoming game will be heavily influenced by the world of the Divinity series. Familiar characters and storylines from past games will reappear, allowing long-time fans to enjoy deeper connections while still making the game accessible to newcomers. Although building on existing lore, Divinity will also tell a brand new, self-contained story.
The new game picks up after a significant event from the last one, building on what’s already happened in the story. While the past has shaped the game’s world, things are changing and a new era is beginning. According to an interview with VGC, the developers wanted to demonstrate that the game now has a well-developed and consistent universe, and that’s why they’ve connected it to previous events.
The team behind the game is encouraging players to experience the previous titles in the series before the latest release. And there’s good news: yesterday, the critically acclaimed game Divinity: Original Sin II received an updated version, giving fans even more to look forward to.
