Warframe has been in development for over ten years, and is still technically in beta – a fact even the developers playfully acknowledged recently. Despite not being fully ‘finished,’ the game boasts a rich and detailed backstory. To showcase this, they’ve partnered with filmmaker and actor Werner Herzog, who narrates a new trailer, leaving a lasting impression even without appearing on screen.
Warframe’s story and history can be quite complex. Essentially, you play as a Tenno, ancient warriors who’ve been asleep for centuries and suddenly wake up during a galactic war. Over the past 13 years, the game has added a lot of story content, which can be overwhelming. However, the way it’s presented makes it surprisingly engaging.
Rebecca Ford, creative director of Warframe, shared that The Game Awards is a wonderful event that brings together people from many creative fields to honor game development. She explained that their collaboration with Werner Herzog for a new trailer was a perfect fit because he offered a unique and insightful view of Warframe, appreciating its unusual beauty and emotional depth. This partnership helped the team see their game in a new light, strengthening their confidence in Warframe’s future, especially looking ahead to 2026 and beyond. Ford also expressed gratitude to the community for supporting Warframe for over 12 years, and promised to continue innovating and staying true to their unique vision while serving their players in any way they can.
Warframe has been recognized as one of the best free games available, appearing on Gamespot’s list of 25 top titles. Last year, the Warframe franchise also ranked among the top 10 gaming series, according to TopMob. The team behind Warframe, Digital Extremes, is currently developing Soulframe, a new free-to-play multiplayer RPG set in a fantasy world.
