A dark fantasy game called Decrepit was revealed at The Game Awards. It’s a first-person dungeon crawler inspired by popular ‘souls-like‘ games, and while it doesn’t have a set release date yet, it’s currently in development for PC with a target launch in 2026.
Decrepit, similar to other games in the ‘souls-like’ genre, focuses on challenging, stamina-based combat. According to the developers at Jämmerdal Games, success relies on skillfully using your surroundings to defeat enemies. While finding hidden secrets can offer lasting advantages, they won’t replace understanding enemy patterns and perfectly timing your attacks. Each weapon has its own unique moves, and powerful spells can be used when you find the right opening.
I’m really excited about this game! The developers have said they took inspiration from classics like Hexen and Eye of the Beholder, but it’s built around that tough-but-fair ‘souls-like’ style of gameplay. That means you have to learn how enemies attack and time your strikes perfectly. It’s punishing – you lose all your gear when you die and get sent back to the beginning – so remembering what you’ve learned is super important. You also get to pick a class – Mage, Warrior, Rogue, or Shaman – and finding the best equipment to fit your playstyle unlocks cool bonuses and special abilities. It sounds like building the right character is a big part of the fun!
Okay, so in Decrepit, the castle itself always looks the same, but where the enemies are? Totally random every time you play! It really forces you to think on your feet and prove you’re good. The cool thing is, the more I play, the faster I get. Any shortcuts I find stay unlocked, secrets I uncover stay uncovered, and those elevators? They stay working! It’s awesome to build on my progress with each run instead of starting fresh every time.
While Decrepit isn’t the only souls-like game being made with a first-person perspective, Valor Mortis is another one to watch. Developed by the team behind Ghostrunner, Valor Mortis features levels designed like those in Metroidvania games and focuses on careful, strategic close-quarters combat. It was first revealed in August.
