The first trailer for the new Supergirl movie has sparked conversation about this version of the character. Actress Milly Alcock made a quick appearance as Supergirl at the end of James Gunn’s 2025 Superman film, and she brings a fresh, energetic take to superhero roles – and to how female characters are portrayed on screen. While many superhero movies feature flawed male leads, Supergirl promises a character who is authentically herself, imperfections and all.
While promoting the first trailer for Supergirl, actress Alcock was asked by DC Studios co-chairman James Gunn about the message this new version of the character sends to young women. Alcock explained that she wanted viewers, especially women, to see a Supergirl who isn’t flawless or a typical superhero, but rather someone authentic, embracing her imperfections and staying true to herself.
Supergirl offers a powerful message, particularly for young women: it’s okay to be imperfect. Society often pressures women to be flawless in every way, but Kara embraces her flaws and finds strength in them. That’s what makes her character so relatable and inspiring.
‘Supergirl’ Will Showcase a Different and Flawed Female Superhero

Warner Bros.
Based on what we’ve seen of Supergirl in the DCU so far, she’s a very different hero than her cousin Superman, and that’s a good thing. While David Corenswet’s portrayal of the hopeful and selfless Superman was great, it will be equally interesting to see Supergirl as a hero who isn’t perfect but still gets the job done. Ultimately, it’s important for her to be a character who battles her own demons while striving for something bigger. Director James Gunn wanted Kara to have struggles similar to those faced by male heroes like Iron Man and Star-Lord, giving her a relatable and complex journey.
What I really connected with in both the book and the movie was how the female superhero wasn’t perfect. Often, male heroes like Tony Stark and Star-Lord are flawed and messy, but we don’t always see that same level of imperfection in female leads. It was refreshing to see a character who was genuinely flawed and struggling, yet still had a good heart.
It’ll be fascinating to see how the new Supergirl movie portrays Kara, a character with a lot of depth. Early comments from actors Alcock and Gunn are encouraging, suggesting that director Craig Gillespie and writer Ana Nogueira really understand the character and are planning a fresh and exciting take on her story for the big screen.
