It’s been five years since the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie came out, and many people have forgotten just how different the initial design was. The original Sonic looked quite scary, with odd proportions and too many teeth! Thankfully, the filmmakers redesigned the character to be more like the Sonic from the video games. But a dedicated group of fans, calling themselves A26, aren’t happy with even the revised version. They’re working on a project called Sonic the Hedgehog: The 2019 Cut to put the original, unsettling Sonic back in the movie, and they’re releasing a trailer on December 24th.
A26 had planned to release a trailer this week, but decided to delay it by a few weeks because they weren’t happy with how it looked. In a social media post, they explained they want Sonic’s movements to be as smooth as possible and felt the original trailer wouldn’t have been well-received. They assured fans the wait will be worth it, promising the final version will accurately reflect the character’s classic design.

To show you what the project will look like, A26 shared a short GIF of the original, less polished version of Sonic running on a treadmill. The full project is planned for release online in 2026. If you’re eager to see this early version of Sonic, you can actually catch him—voiced by Tim Robinson of ‘I Think You Should Leave’—in the 2022 film ‘Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers’.
Another Sonic the Hedgehog movie is planned to come out in March 2027, and a separate film expanding the Sonic universe is scheduled for December 22, 2028.
