The initial trailer for the upcoming Supergirl movie reveals some of the key powers that Kara Zor-El (played by Milly Alcock) will demonstrate. This film is the second live-action movie in the newly rebooted DC Universe led by James Gunn and Peter Safran. Following Alcock’s brief appearance in Superman, the House of the Dragon actress is now taking center stage as the iconic DC Comics character, marking her first leading role in this new DCU era.
With the release of Supergirl approaching, the first trailer is now available, giving fans a preview of the exciting, action-filled story coming to theaters on June 26, 2026. The trailer features the return of Melissa Benoist as Kara Zor-El and Krypto the Superdog, and introduces Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll. It also offers a brief look at Jason Momoa as Lobo.
The trailer is full of exciting action sequences demonstrating Supergirl’s abilities. Like her cousin Superman, Supergirl’s powers come from her Kryptonian heritage being boosted by Earth’s sun. While this Superman isn’t as powerful as some others, viewers can anticipate that Supergirl’s powers will be similar to those of David Corenswet’s Superman.
Supergirl’s Kryptonian Powers Highlighted in First Trailer
Super Strength

Superman and Supergirl are both well-known for their incredible strength, which is one of their most common abilities.
The Supergirl trailer showcases Kara’s incredible strength, like when she powerfully throws an opponent into a wall with their own axe. She also effortlessly battles a group of bandits using a flail. Throughout the series, Kara and Ruthye will face various threats, including pirates and bounty hunters, and Kara’s strength will undoubtedly be a key advantage.
During a recent press event for the new Supergirl trailer – attended by TopMob – James Gunn discussed the character’s abilities. He confirmed that, mirroring the comics, Kara’s powers will change based on the planet she’s currently on.
The movie is enjoyable to watch because the characters travel between different planets – some red, some yellow. Interestingly, Superman and Supergirl lose their superpowers on the red planets, becoming just like regular people.
Flight

Supergirl is famous for her ability to fly, and she often uses it along with her super strength and speed. The movie trailer shows her flying into space, carrying Ruthye, and even breaking through a window with a powerful burst of flight.
A stunning scene in the new DC movie features Supergirl flying faster than the speed of sound as she rockets into space, promising plenty of thrilling flight sequences.
Heat Vision

As seen in the upcoming Superman movie, Kryptonian heroes like Supergirl can shoot beams of intense heat from their eyes. The first trailer briefly shows Supergirl using this ability – called heat vision – to protect Ruthye from an attack.
In the 2025 film Superman, the hero often used his heat vision, which consistently left him with red marks around his eyes afterward. Because of this, it’s possible Kara might experience similar side effects when she uses the same power.
Invulnerability

Supergirl has incredible speed and strength, but she’s also nearly invulnerable. This means she can take a huge amount of damage without getting hurt. The trailer shows her surviving things that would be deadly for a normal person – like crashing after flying, breaking through glass, and even venturing into space – all thanks to her Kryptonian physiology.
As a big fan, I remember getting a cool little peek at how tough Kara is way back in the Superman movie. There’s a scene where her super-powered dog, Krypto, is literally tossing her around inside the Fortress of Solitude, and she doesn’t even flinch! It was a fun way to show she could definitely take a hit – or a throw – without getting hurt.
The trailer for the Supergirl movie highlighted a few of Kara Zor-El’s key powers, but the comics feature many more abilities that weren’t shown. These could still appear in the 2026 film, such as:
Bonus: Super Speed

Along with superhuman strength, super speed is a frequent power of Superman and Supergirl.
Kara frequently uses her super speed in comic books, letting her move and react much faster than normal people – a huge advantage when fighting. When combined with her ability to fly, she can travel across the globe in just minutes and even generate powerful winds, like tunnels or cyclones, during battles.
Bonus: Freeze Breath

Like her cousin Clark, Supergirl has the ability to freeze things with her breath – a power that complements her heat vision. She can use this to stop enemies in their tracks or create icy surfaces, similar to how Superman froze a giant creature in a movie scene.
Bonus: X-Ray Vision

Kara also has X-ray vision, a power that lets her see through objects like walls and buildings, and even see inside people and aliens to find their weaknesses. With many different aliens expected in the 2026 Supergirl movie (some of whom were shown in the trailer), this ability will likely be very helpful for her.
Bonus: Super Senses

Supergirl’s powers make all of her senses incredibly sharp. Beyond well-known abilities like heat vision, x-ray vision, and freezing breath, she also has super hearing and a greatly enhanced sense of smell and taste. She frequently uses her super hearing to listen in on important conversations, detect distant events, and find people who need help.
