Robert Redford’s final movie was one of the biggest films of all time

Robert Redford, the famous actor and director known for his long and successful career in Hollywood, has passed away at 89. His last on-screen appearance was six years ago, in a film that was a major box office hit.

The star died on Tuesday (September 16) morning, according to a statement from his representative.

According to Cindi Berger, chairman and CEO of Rogers & Cowan PMK, Robert Redford died peacefully at his home in Sundance, Utah, on September 16, 2025, surrounded by family. He was in the place he loved most. The family has asked for privacy during this difficult time.

Fans and celebrities are mourning his death, fondly remembering his famous performance in *Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid* and his creation of the Sundance Film Festival. He also had a role in the massively popular Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Robert Redford’s final role was in Avengers: Endgame

Robert Redford played Alexander Pierce in Avengers: Endgame. Pierce was the former, discredited director of S.H.I.E.L.D., a character audiences first met in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

It turned out he was the hidden leader of Hydra. Even though his character died in *Captain America: The Winter Soldier*, he reappeared briefly in *Avengers: Endgame* due to the film’s time travel plot.

Redford’s final role was in a massive blockbuster, a film that earned almost $2.8 billion globally and ranks among the highest-grossing movies ever made. Though he provided the voice for a character, Lokia the Dolphin Monster, in the 2020 animated film *Omniboat: A Fast Boat Fantasia*, he hasn’t appeared on screen in a movie or television show since.

Joe Russo and Christopher Marcus, who co-wrote Endgame, said Robert Redford told everyone on set that this would be his last acting role.

During the film’s commentary, Marcus revealed that Robert Redford considered this to be his final movie role. Russo added that it was, in fact, the last day of acting for Redford, ever.

These films have given me seven amazing years, and directing Robert Redford on his final day of acting was definitely a highlight.

Redford said he joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe because he was curious about the innovative filmmaking techniques being used – specifically, how technology brings comic book characters to life. He wanted to experience this new approach firsthand.

I was really curious about the advanced technology used in making the Avengers movies and wanted to see it firsthand. It felt like exploring a completely new world of filmmaking, and I was excited to have that chance.

You can now watch Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Endgame on Disney Plus.
