So, I heard a really interesting story about how Flight Simulator 2024 almost didn’t come to PlayStation! Apparently, Microsoft initially said no to the idea. But thankfully, they changed their minds, and now it looks like a bunch of other Xbox games might be coming to PlayStation too. Jorg Neumann, the head of the Flight Simulator team, said it basically opened the floodgates – a ‘whole avalanche’ of games, as he put it!
According to an interview with XDA-Developers, the idea to release Microsoft Flight Simulator on PlayStation consoles came from within the development team. This effort resulted in today’s launch of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 for both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
As a huge fan, I was amazed by how massive the 2020 Flight Simulator became – it eventually took up 300 GB! They had so many ideas for more content, they thought it could even reach 1 TB. But instead of making the game unbelievably huge, the team decided to do something really smart. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is much smaller – only needing about 8 GB of space – and they’re streaming everything else from the cloud. Apparently, this change is what’s allowing them to bring the game to other platforms, which is awesome!
I actually pitched the idea of bringing our game to PlayStation about two and a half years ago, but it didn’t pan out at the time – they said no, it was too early. Then, someone at Sony who used to be a big flight sim fan saw what we were doing and thought it’d be a great fit for them. They contacted our president directly, who then came to me and said, ‘Hey, remember that PlayStation conversation we had a while back? Sony’s interested now!’
Neumann feels this discussion really started the trend of Xbox games appearing on PlayStation, though Flight Simulator wasn’t the initial release.
Starting in early 2025, Microsoft began releasing several of its popular games on PlayStation and Nintendo Switch, such as Grounded, Sea of Thieves, and Forza Horizon 5. This year also saw the release of Doom: The Dark Ages and The Outer Worlds 2 on PlayStation 5.
In 2026, Microsoft plans to release Halo: Campaign Evolved on PlayStation 5, marking the first time a Halo game will be available on a competitor’s console. The game will be available on both PS5 and Xbox at the same time next year.
Microsoft explained that it’s bringing Xbox games to PlayStation and Nintendo Switch to reach more players. Since the PlayStation 5 has outsold the Xbox Series X|S, offering Xbox games on that platform is a smart business move for Microsoft.
According to reports, Microsoft’s finance chief, Amy Hood, is pushing Xbox to become more profitable. This likely explains several recent moves, including releasing more games on platforms other than Xbox, raising prices for Game Pass and the Xbox consoles themselves, and making cuts through layoffs, studio closures, and canceled publishing deals.
