The 2025 Primetime Emmy Awards are over, and there were definitely some unexpected winners! While many expected shows like *Severance* or *The White Lotus* to dominate the drama categories, *The Pitt* – now streaming on HBO Max – ended up taking home several major awards, including Outstanding Drama and Outstanding Lead Actor for Noah Wyle. Even Nate Bargatze’s effort to shorten acceptance speeches didn’t quite work out, but *Andor* did receive a well-deserved award for its writing.
I’ve been hoping Noah Wyle would win an Emmy ever since his days on *ER* back in 2000, so I’m thrilled *The Pitt* finally brought him that recognition. The medical drama received a total of thirteen Emmy nominations and won five awards: Outstanding Drama Series, with Noah Wyle winning Outstanding Lead Actor, Katherine LaNasa taking Outstanding Supporting Actress, Shawn Hatosy from *Chicago P.D.* winning Outstanding Guest Actor, and the show earning Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series. Wyle also contributed to the Outstanding Drama Series win as an executive producer.
I’m really hoping Noah Wyle wins an acting award for his current role, especially since it’s been 26 years since his last nomination for *ER*. Honestly, I’d probably be rooting for him no matter what, because of a particularly meaningful episode from the sixth season of *ER* that really resonated with me, and gives his work new significance now in 2025.
Even though Wyle wasn’t up for an award for Season 6, I still think it was one of his best performances in the series, which you can currently watch on Hulu. This season included a major plot twist – be warned, spoiler alert! – where Carter and Lucy (played by Kellie Martin) were attacked by a patient, resulting in Lucy’s death and leaving Carter with lasting pain. This happened way back in February 2000, so consider yourself warned if you’re just discovering the show now.
One of my favorite episodes of *ER* is the one right after Carter and Lucy were attacked, although Carter was unconscious for much of it. The rest of the season focused on his struggle with Lucy’s death and his increasing dependence on pain medication. This culminated in the Season 6 finale, “May Day,” where his colleagues at County General staged an intervention to help him.
By that point, he was too deep in his addiction to be rational and angrily left, willing to risk losing everything instead of acknowledging his problem and getting help. Dr. Benton (Eriq La Salle) caught up to him and convinced him to go to rehab, though not without getting punched in the process. Noah Wyle powerfully portrayed a range of emotions – from anger and aggression to anxiety and despair – all while convincingly showing how tense and on edge his character, Carter, was. Here’s a look at the scene.
I didn’t see “May Day” when it first aired on NBC in 2000, but I quickly caught a rerun and was deeply moved – just as emotional as the character Carter! Noah Wyle delivered an incredible performance, and I’ve always felt he deserved an Emmy nomination for that season. As a huge *ER* fan, I was thrilled to see him finally win an Emmy for reprising his role as an emergency room doctor – it felt like a long-deserved reward.
The first season of *The Pitt* had 15 episodes and aired from January to April 2025. Good news for fans – you won’t have to wait long for season two! It will premiere on January 8, 2026, shortly after the 2025 TV season ends. You can currently stream *The Pitt* on HBO Max and *ER* on Hulu.
