Unlike the previous Octopath Traveler games, this new installment lets you control a party of eight characters in battle. They’re arranged in pairs – one character in the front and one in the back. During each pair’s turn, you can switch their positions. While the back row is generally safer and allows a character to recover, some special abilities actually work better when used from the back. This raises the question: how do these abilities function when used from that position?

Actually, you can’t attack or use skills while positioned in the back row. This makes some skill descriptions a little unclear. Skills that refer to the back row should really say something like, “more powerful if the character began their turn in the back row.” Here’s how it works: to get those bonuses, the character needs to start their turn in the back row, move to the front, and then use the skill.
