Gwyneth Paltrow Thinks Intimacy Coordinators Are Good, Actually

Gwyneth Paltrow recently faced some criticism for comments she made about intimacy coordinators. In an interview with Vanity Fair, she explained that she felt such detailed direction would be creatively limiting, recalling a time when on-set intimacy was more straightforward. However, she clarified to The Hollywood Reporter that her comments weren’t meant to dismiss the value of intimacy coordinators. She simply noted she wasn’t accustomed to having one, as she began her career in a different era, and was surprised by the role itself. Paltrow emphasized that she supports the increased protections for actors that have come about from the #MeToo movement, but personally didn’t require that level of guidance.

Paltrow admitted she felt more uncomfortable talking about potentially sensitive scenes than actually performing them, and wasn’t sure the process was entirely helpful. The interview also touched on her experiences working with Harvey Weinstein, even after he allegedly harassed her when she was young. While she acknowledges things were different in her early career, she believes intimacy coordinators are a positive development for actors today. She’s especially glad her daughter, if she chooses to pursue acting, will benefit from having clear boundaries and a focus on consent on set.
