YouTuber lives as Cyberpunk 2077 NPC for 7 days & it was “too real”

A YouTuber is trying something unique with Cyberpunk 2077: they’re roleplaying as a normal person just trying to live life in the game’s Night City.

It’s always fun to test how realistic a game like Cyberpunk 2077 truly is by just trying to live a normal life within it. Similar to GTA, simply driving around and following traffic laws often leads to unexpected consequences, like getting pulled over by the police.

YouTuber Any Austin did something unique: he played as an ordinary, non-player character (NPC) in the game Cyberpunk 2077 for a full week within the game. He fully immersed himself, simulating daily life – eating, working, socializing, and even using the restroom – whenever his character could, and found the experience surprisingly realistic.

In the video, he details his attempt to live like a non-player character (NPC). He rented a small city apartment and created a rigid schedule for everything – meals, sleep, work, socializing, and relaxation. To match the NPC’s 24-hour cycle, he ate smaller meals throughout the day, aiming to feel hungry at consistent times.

To earn money, he decided to work as a server at a Chinese restaurant. He scheduled himself for long shifts – twelve hours a day, six days a week – but adjusted the hours to fit the three-hour periods within the game.

Honestly, work in Night City got old fast. I thought being a service worker would be cool, but it turned out to be super repetitive and boring. The NPCs were the worst – they all had the same lines and did the same things over and over. It was hard to even pretend to care about what they were saying!

The game’s daily routines also made him very conscious of how time moved forward within it, adding a unique sense of realism and making the game world feel incredibly vibrant.

What started as a lighthearted experiment quickly became frustrating, and he began to dread going to work. Other players agreed, saying it felt uncomfortably realistic. The experience culminated in an encounter with the police and ultimately gave him a newfound sympathy for the simple, background characters in Night City.
