The War Sails DLC for Mount & Blade Bannerlord just came out a few hours ago, and early reviews from fans are very positive. I haven’t formed my own opinion yet, as I’ve only completed the tutorial. But this isn’t the quick tutorial from the original game – it’s a lengthy experience with cutscenes, action sequences, chases, stealth elements, and lots of battles. TaleWorlds Entertainment aimed for something truly grand with this DLC, though it might not appeal to every player.
Inquire at Ostican
The new main questline starts with a task in Ostican. You can travel there like you did in the original game, or quickly jump there using a window that appears at the beginning of the campaign. Most players will likely choose the quick jump – everyone wants their ships fast! But even if you prefer to explore on foot and aren’t interested in ships, I still suggest completing the tutorial.
The new tutorial is “mandatory”
Many players, including myself, find the initial hours of Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord a bit slow. You start by recruiting a small group and building it into an army, often while managing limited funds and basic gear. Progress usually involves gradually defeating bandits to gain experience and resources. However, the game’s new tutorial doesn’t cover this early stage at all.
The mission ‘Inquire at Ostican’ is just the beginning – you’ll complete many more. As you progress, you’ll command numerous warriors and acquire several ships. While these forces often won’t last beyond a single mission, your experience, equipment, and earned money will carry over even after the story ends. Plus, after the tutorial – which involves rescuing your sister (she seems to get into trouble a lot!) – you’ll receive 20 experienced warriors and a ship as a reward. Importantly, the tutorial skips the very first stage of the game.
Not all people will like it, though
The process does take a while, which might frustrate players eager to jump into the sandbox mode. While it’s still significantly quicker than building everything up from scratch – I completed the tutorial with around 17,000 denars – there are moments when it can feel a bit demanding.
As a player, I really appreciated that you could retry missions after messing up, and the final quest was especially thoughtful with its checkpoints. It made tackling that last part – which had everything from sneaking around to intense chases and an awesome naval battle with tons of ships – way less stressful and a lot more fun!
You’re free to pause and resume the game whenever you like, but it can be tough to stop once you get going! Luckily, all the tutorial areas are near the city, so you won’t have to trek across the entire map. Plus, the game provides everything you need – money, people, and ships – except for food, which you’ll need to purchase.
I highly suggest finishing every mission. It’s a great way to learn how the game works and will significantly improve your character’s abilities, saving you time and effort later on.
