The creators of Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers, are getting ready to launch the last season of their show on Netflix starting November 26th with the first four episodes. They’ve been discussing their experiences working with Netflix and the lessons they took from the success and challenges of Game of Thrones.
In a recent interview with Variety, Matt and Ross Duffer discussed how they developed Stranger Things, including the shows and ideas that influenced them and what they specifically tried to avoid. Matt Duffer mentioned that the fantasy series Game of Thrones was a key inspiration when they first launched the show in 2016.
We often looked to “Game of Thrones” as an example, specifically how Dan Weiss and David Benioff grew the show after its initial success. It really took off, and we used that as a reason to pitch scaling up our own show to Netflix – arguing that it would attract a larger audience. That was our main argument to them.

I was really intrigued to hear that the director, Matt, drew inspiration from M. Night Shyamalan. He talked about how Shyamalan went from being seen as a complete failure with some early films to achieving huge success with The Sixth Sense. It’s fascinating to see how a filmmaker can turn things around like that, and it clearly resonated with Matt’s vision for this project.
Matt explained that the actor consistently reinvented himself with unique roles, taking chances that he found thrilling. He continued to create innovative films, and while Matt wasn’t sure if he realized it at the time, especially after Stranger Things, the actor had become a significant presence in their lives.
For almost ten years, Stranger Things has been hugely popular and has earned Netflix over $1 billion. The sci-fi series is set in the small town of Hawkins, Indiana, and follows a group of kids as they uncover a mystery involving a girl with special powers, named Eleven, and the disappearance of their friend.
The popular show Game of Thrones became increasingly expensive to produce. It started with a budget of about $6 million per episode, which rose to $10 million by season six. The final season cost around $15 million per episode, bringing the total cost for that season to $90 million.
Like many shows, Stranger Things began with a budget of around $6 million per episode. However, costs have risen dramatically, with the latest season (season 5) estimated to cost between $50 and $60 million per episode – a substantial increase, particularly when compared to the production costs of Game of Thrones.
As a huge fan, I’m so excited to share that the first part of Stranger Things season 5 drops on November 26th! Then, just in time for the holidays, Volume 2 arrives on December 25th. And finally, we’ll get the very last episodes – the finale – on Netflix on December 31st. It’s going to be a long wait, but it’ll be worth it!
