Netflix has some great options for watching this weekend. I recommend a combination of a movie that’s leaving soon, something brand new, and a rewatch before the next installment comes out. Last week, they added an animated original, a scary movie, and an action film with Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson.
For a relaxing weekend watch, Netflix has two great, feel-good movies that offer a break after a more intense film. Looking ahead to 2025, Netflix has several potential Oscar winners, and either of these would be a perfect way to kick off your weekend on the couch.
3. Train Dreams (2025)
The new movie Train Dreams is now available on Netflix, starting today, November 21st. It’s a compelling story starring Joel Edgerton as Robert Grainier, a railroad worker struggling to adapt to a rapidly changing world, and it’s worth watching this weekend.
Critics are loving the new Netflix film, Train Dreams, giving it a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Many are praising David Edgerton’s performance. The movie tells a deeply moving story about a man grappling with his identity, the challenges of being separated from his family due to work, and is already being discussed as a potential Oscar nominee.
This film is adapted from Denis Johnson’s short story, also called Train Dreams. Joel Edgerton stars alongside Felicity Jones, who plays his wife, Gladys Grainier, as well as William H. Macy, Kerry Condon, and others. Ultimately, Train Dreams beautifully captures the remarkable nature hidden within everyday life.
2. Wonka (2023)
Following a feel-good movie to kick off the weekend, I recommend Wonka on Netflix. Last week, I highlighted Dwayne Johnson in San Andreas. This weekend offers another exciting adventure, this time starring Timothée Chalamet in Wonka.
Timothée Chalamet is charming as Willy Wonka in this delightful movie that tells the story of how he became the world-famous chocolatier. It’s a fun, heartwarming, and surprising film with fantastic musical numbers that are sure to get stuck in your head. Just a heads up: Wonka will no longer be available on Netflix after December 1st, so don’t miss out!
1. Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery
We finished our Netflix weekend with a fun, lighthearted mystery, continuing the shift from more serious dramas to comedies. Rian Johnson’s Knives Out movies revitalized the classic whodunit genre, inspiring a wave of funny murder mysteries recently. The newest installment, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, will be available on Netflix starting December 12th.
The movie will have a short run in theaters starting November 26th. Now is a great time to revisit the last film, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, before the new one comes out. Glass Onion features Daniel Craig as detective Benoit Blanc investigating a mystery on a billionaire’s island, making it a perfect Netflix film for a relaxing weekend.
