A ramen chef in northern Japan became an online sensation after defending himself against a bear. He reportedly used a judo technique to throw the bear, then remarkably went back to work with a bleeding face.
At a ramen shop called Tenya in Sannohe Town, Aomori Prefecture, a 57-year-old employee was preparing ingredients around 5 am when he saw something black move. A bear, about one meter in size, then attacked him.
He explained to Japanese media that the animal suddenly turned and scratched his face near his right eye. He said he didn’t have time to react.
The bear slashed at the man’s face with its claws, cutting deeply near his eye. The chef tried to fight back with one hand, but it didn’t have any effect.
He tried repeatedly to move it, but it wouldn’t move at all, and it was really painful on his hands. So, he decided to try a different approach.

The chef quickly got close to the bear, tripped its leg using a judo throw, and sent it tumbling backwards. Startled, the bear immediately got up and ran into the mountains.
Even though the chef had cuts on his face and nose, he immediately went back inside and continued making ramen.
When Sasaki, the shop manager, arrived a few minutes later, he discovered his employee calmly preparing soup stock, despite blood running down his face.
Sasaki said he urged the man to go to the hospital, but the man insisted it wasn’t necessary and that he needed to open the shop.
He was taken by ambulance to Hachinohe Municipal Hospital, where doctors treated a 10-centimeter cut near his right eye and found he had broken a rib. He’s currently recovering on sick leave and is expected to make a full recovery.

Everyone is talking about the chef’s amazing reaction, which has made him famous across the country. Surprisingly, he doesn’t have any training in martial arts and used to work in healthcare before becoming a ramen chef.
His phone hasn’t stopped ringing.
My daughter called after seeing the news and asked if I was the person featured in the report,” he explained. “I also heard from friends, and even the mayor stopped by to make sure I was okay.
He explained that when facing a bear, there’s no time to drop to the ground or hide. Bears can swipe at your face immediately. He felt fortunate it was only a young bear, because if it had been a mother bear protecting her cubs, the situation would have been fatal.
