Batman is an incredibly popular superhero, and James Gunn understands the difficulty of bringing such an iconic character to life in the new DC Universe. With so many existing Batman stories in comics, TV shows, video games, and films already out there, the challenge is to create something fresh and engaging.
James Gunn recently discussed the future of DC Studios with Rolling Stone, sharing his vision for a new live-action Batman and demonstrating he understands the difficulties ahead. He appears ready to tackle these challenges head-on, and we think his approach suggests the DC Universe’s Batman will be anything but dull.
James Gunn Has Confirmed He’s Aware Of Batman Oversaturation
Prior to the premiere of Superman, James Gunn discussed Batman and Wonder Woman in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine.
James Gunn understands there are a lot of Batman stories already out there and constantly being released. He knows Batman frequently makes up the bulk of DC’s comics each week, and with a 90-year history spanning comics, films, video games, and television, the character’s presence is undeniable.
It feels like every possible Batman story has already been explored. For the last three decades, Batman has appeared in a huge number of DC Comics, making him the world’s most recognizable and popular superhero. While his complexity is a big part of his appeal, constantly seeing Batman can also make the character feel stale. The challenge is figuring out how to keep his stories engaging and fresh.
James Gunn appears focused on creating something fresh for DC, while also aiming for a Batman as captivating as the one Robert Pattinson portrays in Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe. That universe will exist separately as an Elseworlds story, outside of the main DCU.
These comments demonstrate Gunn’s confidence in his vision for this new DC Universe. Instead of being discouraged by the amount of existing Batman content, he views it as an opportunity to explore fresh and innovative perspectives on the character – offering something new, or at least a unique on-screen approach to familiar themes.

Gunn hinted at a clever approach to introducing Batman into the DCU, suggesting he’s found a way to make the character feel fresh and exciting when he appears, without simply repeating familiar stories.
Batman needs a compelling reason to exist within the DC Universe. Simply making a Batman movie because he’s a popular character isn’t enough. We need a version of Batman that feels necessary and is distinct from the one Matt Reeves created, but also avoids being overly comedic or campy – that’s not the direction I want to take it. I’m currently working with a writer to develop a specific approach that I believe will work, and we’re making good progress towards bringing it to life.
James Gunn probably approaches stories this way because of his overall philosophy about superheroes. He’s known for building deep, emotional connections between characters, both in his work with the Guardians of the Galaxy for Marvel and now as the leader of DC Studios.
We recently saw examples of this in both James Gunn’s Superman and the second season of Peacemaker. If the Batman in the new DC Universe is going to be truly unique, as Gunn intends, he’ll probably focus on similar themes with fresh storylines, all while staying true to the essential elements that have made Batman such a beloved hero for so long.
This approach could also mean giving Batman a firm role within the broader cinematic universe of heroes with superpowers – something we haven’t really seen until now outside of the previous DC Universe films. The new DC Universe is already establishing itself as a place where heroes constantly interact and form teams.
This approach could really allow for more complex and extended Batman stories in theaters. Ultimately, James Gunn has indicated that the primary purpose of this new Batman movie is to fit into and support the larger DC Universe.
A Bigger Family Is Another Strong Concept When It Comes To Giving Batman Movies Something New
To give the DCU’s Batman a modern feel, James Gunn could wisely focus on his relationships with family. It appears the upcoming film, Brave and the Bold, is already moving in that direction, with plans to include Damian Wayne as Robin – Bruce Wayne’s biological son and the fourth character to take on the Robin mantle in the DC Comics.
As a huge DC fan, I’m really excited by the idea that James Gunn’s Batman will be a mentor figure, almost like a father, to other heroes. It’s a side of the character we haven’t really seen in live-action Batman films since the early 2000s, when Michael Keaton was still suiting up – it’s a welcome change from the typically brooding, lone wolf portrayal.
The movie could also go beyond just focusing on Damian as Robin and introduce more members of the Bat-Family. Characters like Nightwing, Red Hood, Tim Drake (as Robin), and Batgirl could all enrich Batman’s world, something the films haven’t really explored beyond what’s found in the comics.
As a huge DC fan, I’m really hoping we see more of the Bat-Family in the DCU. It wouldn’t just be cool to see characters like Nightwing and Robin, but it would also make the whole universe feel much more connected, showing how all of Gotham’s heroes fit into the bigger picture James Gunn is building. I know Gunn isn’t directly involved with Brave and the Bold, but this approach really plays to his strengths – he’s amazing at writing complex, slightly dysfunctional families, and that’s exactly what the Bat-Family is!
Instead of focusing solely on Batman himself, the DC Universe can offer a fresh take on the character by showing him through the eyes of those he’s taught, guided, and protected. This approach lets the filmmakers move beyond worries that Batman might be seen as dull on screen.
Brave and the Bold is expected to be released sometime in 2028 from DC Studios.
