It’s been over 20 years since Half-Life 2 came out, and fans are still waiting for Half-Life 3. While Valve hasn’t made the sequel, they’ve focused on making Steam the leading platform for buying PC games and even created a highly-rated VR game. However, talk of Half-Life 3 is starting up again, as rumors often do.
Kotaku recently pointed out that Steam only shows one upcoming game – Deadlock, which is still being developed. With The Game Awards approaching, rumors are swirling again about a possible reveal of Half-Life 3. Some fans even think a recent Game Awards post celebrating the 27th anniversary of the first Half-Life game is a hint about a new release.

Every year, The Game Awards posts this same announcement, but it always sparks rumors anyway. Recently, people digging through Valve’s files have found hints of a new, unreleased shooter game called HLX. And with Valve now selling Steam Machine and Steam Frame hardware, fans believe a new Half-Life game would greatly boost sales.
Early in 2025, Mike Shapiro, the voice actor for G-Man in the Half-Life series, posted a mysterious New Year’s message that many fans interpreted as a hint about the upcoming release of Half-Life 3. Unfortunately, that turned out to be another false alarm.
Half-Life 2 fans were most excited this year by a demo showing dramatically improved graphics thanks to an RTX mod. While many still hope Valve will finish the story left open at the end of Half-Life 2: Episode 2, the latest release in the Half-Life series remains the VR game, Half-Life: Alyx, which came out in 2020.
