After making a previous attempt, it seems like Kevin Bacon might soon have the chance to revisit his beloved ‘90s horror series. Known for movies like Footloose and Mystic River, Bacon has delved into the horror genre multiple times, starting with the iconic slasher film, Friday the 13th. In this 1980 movie, he played Jack Burrell, a character infamously killed by Mrs. Voorhees as she stabbed him in the throat while hidden under a bed. Later, he appeared alongside Kiefer Sutherland and Julia Roberts in Flatliners, where they explored the implications of near-death experiences for a group of medical students.
In addition to his roles, Bacon featured in “Stir of Echoes,” a horror-mystery directed by David Koepp that was critically acclaimed but commercially underperformed. He portrayed the sinister character, Sebastian Caine, in “Hollow Man,” a 2000 adaptation of “The Invisible Man.” More recently, Bacon has appeared in “The Darkness,” “You Should Have Left,” and the 2022 slasher film “They/Them,” all produced by Blumhouse. However, none of these productions have had as significant an impact as his ’90s monster movie, which ultimately spawned a whole franchise.
The Tremors Franchise May Be Returning
Stampede Entertainment Is Considering Future Movies
In 1990, Kevin Bacon played the lead role in “Tremors,” a horror-comedy that revolved around a small Nevada town besieged by colossal subterranean creatures called Graboids. Joining Bacon, who took on the character of Valentine McKee, were Fred Ward, Michael Gross, Finn Carter, and Reba McEntire among others. Ron Underwood was at the helm for this film that grossed over $16 million and boasts an outstanding Rotten Tomatoes rating of 88%. After its debut, additional “Tremors” films and a brief television series were created. However, Bacon appeared only in the initial movie.
Earlier, it was made known that Stampede Entertainment, where writers Brent Maddock and S.S. Wilson hold partnerships, regained the rights to Tremors. Recently, in an April update, the company disclosed that they are not open to outside suggestions at present. Instead, the upcoming film will revisit Perfection, Nevada, and delve into some “unusual concepts” for new settings as well. Stampede Entertainment clarified that they won’t be reprising the original movie or rehashing ideas from their Tremors 5 screenplay, but they are contemplating ideas that could potentially bring back Kevin Bacon as Val, although there are no guarantees!
At the Santa Fe Tremors Fest held in October 2024, it was revealed that the team behind Stampede Entertainment had regained control over the initial screenplay for Tremors.
We’ve been exploring what this may allow us to do, so here’s the update.
First, we aren’t reading outside ideas.
We’re brainstorming concepts for a follow-up to our Perfection series, potentially including a second installment that revolves around returning characters, and maybe even a couple of additional, exotic scenarios involving those burrowing beasts known as graboids.
In any proposal we make regarding our project to Hollywood, it won’t be a rehash of the initial film featuring a fresh set of actors. Furthermore, Tremors 5 will not simply be an adaptation of our original script.
We are considering ideas that feature the return of Kevin Bacon as Val, but no promises!
Our Take On A Tremors Sequel Starring Bacon
It Could Be Huge For The Franchise
Reviving the “Tremors” franchise by bringing back the iconic character played by Bacon after close to four decades, could be a major boost for this horror series and its enduring popularity. Although several other sequels have been produced, with the latest one released in 2020, none have had a theatrical release since the original. By leveraging nostalgia and potentially reuniting Bacon with Stampede Entertainment, the upcoming movie has the potential to be the most successful installment yet.
