This story contains spoilers for Season 8 episode 15 of “9-1-1.”
Kenneth Choi refused to let Showrunner Tim Minear eliminate Captain Bobby Nash quietly. Instead, he wanted to battle for the character’s life.
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actor who portrays firefighter Howie “Chimney” Han from ABC’s drama series, expressed disagreement with the show’s creator, Minear, regarding the on-screen death of Bobby Nash (played by Peter Krause), the captain at Chimney’s LAFD station 118.
Choi expressed intense weeping, exclaiming, ‘I’m finding this absurd! I recognize it’s not genuine! Yet, why do I feel so affected?’ Despite his attempts at humor, the situation left him deeply saddened.”
“Choi cried uncontrollably, joking, ‘What on earth is going on here? This isn’t real! But why am I reacting this way?’ Regardless of his attempt to laugh it off, he was profoundly affected by the situation.
He went on saying, “After that, I found myself moving through the stages of grief, primarily denial: It just doesn’t add up. Why would you take such a step? You were essentially taking away our guiding presence… He attempted to articulate his reasoning for making this decision, but I disagreed with him vehemently. I argued with him about it right up until we handled the funeral arrangements, as I was hoping: Perhaps they’ll reconsider. Maybe they’ll alter their plan. Perhaps they’ll go back on their decision.
Regrettably, Minear had already decided. In the episode “Lab Rats,” number 815 of “9-1-1,” Bobby took action to barricade the doors of a lab holding a lethal virus. In doing so, he inadvertently trapped himself within, thereby shielding his team from contracting the illness.
After the initial airing of the episode, Krause issued a statement commenting on the shocking demise of his character.
It’s been reported that many fans are disappointed by this outcome, and understandably so. As Krause stated, “This was a loss.” However, it wasn’t just a daring move on a daring series; Bobby Nash was written to make a sacrifice, a role he was perfectly suited for. Just like first responders who risk their lives daily to ensure others can live another day, his character’s storyline pays tribute to them. At ‘9-1-1’, we honor and appreciate all the brave men and women who perform these dangerous jobs and keep us safe. Making our show can be tough with long working hours, demanding stunts, and intricate disasters. We couldn’t do it without each other.
