‘9-1-1’ Spinoff in the Works at ABC as Ryan Murphy Explains Why ‘Lone Star’ Was Axed (EXCLUSIVE)

As a longtime aficionado of the thrilling and emotionally charged drama that Ryan Murphy has masterfully crafted over the years, I eagerly await the arrival of yet another installment in the “9-1-1” franchise. Having grown up glued to my television set during the golden age of network television, I can’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia as I witness this modern renaissance of the genre.

With one “9-1-1” show on its way out, another is on the horizon from Ryan Murphy.

Tim Minear and I are currently in the process of creating a brand-new spinoff series which we’re actively writing. Our aim is to air it during the fall season next year,” Murphy shares with EbMaster. Regrettably, despite our affection for ‘Lone Star’, its finances didn’t add up. It was a Disney production on Fox network, and unfortunately, the combination wasn’t viable. We had a substantial run with it. Now, we’re preparing to debut a new show in an unspecified location that I can’t disclose at the moment, but it promises to be exciting. Furthermore, ‘9-1-1’ has shifted to ABC and is now dominating Thursday nights. Evidently, they have a taste for this kind of programming, so we’re planning to offer them another show that I genuinely enjoy.

The concept and location of the new “9-1-1” spinoff is still to be determined.

The drama series “9-1-1,” co-created by Murphy, Minear, and Brad Falchuk, debuted on Fox in 2018. Following Season 6, the show shifted to ABC due to being produced by 20th Television, a division of Disney. Meanwhile, “9-1-1 Lone Star” premiered on Fox in 2020 and has stayed there. The fifth season began airing on Sept. 23, not long after Fox announced it would be the final one, attracting approximately 3 million viewers.

Incorporating streaming data, Fox’s latest scripted broadcast has been its biggest since the end of “Lone Star” in 2023 (excluding post-NFL broadcasts), in terms of viewership within the first 3 days after airing. Simultaneously, “9-1-1” and Ryan Murphy’s “Doctor Odyssey” have consistently ranked among the top two most-watched titles on Hulu for the past three days.

In an interview with EbMaster in August, Rob Lowe, the star of “9-1-1: Lone Star,” shared that he had anticipated the show’s conclusion, but this sparked even more determination among the team.

Given that we knew this was likely our final season, it influenced everything we worked on. Our goal was to demonstrate to viewers what can still be achieved in network television when there’s a willingness to create it. It seems as though we might be concluding an era of specific shows – though it doesn’t feel like it. Instead, it marks the end of our chance to produce such shows, and I believe they were remarkable. We aimed to leave with a strong argument for the worth of shows like these, and I think we succeeded. I am particularly proud of the stories we told each week; they were essentially mini-movies.

“9-1-1” airs on Thursdays on ABC while “9-1-1: Lone Star” airs on Mondays on Fox.
