ABC is renewing four dramas and one comedy series, EbMaster has learned.
The broadcaster owned by Disney has ordered more episodes for the shows “9-1-1,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “The Rookie,” “Shifting Gears,” and “Will Trent.” This means that “9-1-1” will continue to Season 9, “Grey’s Anatomy” will reach Season 22, “The Rookie” will go into its eighth season, “Shifting Gears” will air its second season, and “Will Trent” will start its fourth.
Previously, ABC announced that they would be renewing both “High Potential” and the popular comedy “Abbott Elementary”. The only ABC show yet to receive renewal news is “Doctor Odyssey”. This season, ABC has decided not to commission any new pilots, but they have ordered the spin-off of “9-1-1”, titled “9-1-1: Nashville”, directly for series. Chris O’Donnell will be playing a leading role in this new production.
Among the current series renewals, “Shifting Gears” was considered uncertain for another season due to its ratings decline since its January debut. The multi-camera sitcom starring Tim Allen and Kat Dennings experienced a significant drop in viewers, with 7.8 million viewers in Nielsen Live+7 ratings during its premiere, compared to just 5.17 million in the finale in March – a decrease of about 33%. However, it’s worth noting that this figure does not include streaming viewership, which ABC initially reported as strong at the show’s launch but has yet to disclose additional data on its performance on Hulu since January.
ABC currently only has “Abbott” scheduled as a comedy for the upcoming season, since “The Conners” will conclude this spring.
The medical drama ‘Doctor Odyssey,’ produced by Ryan Murphy under his contract with Disney’s 20th Television, has been reported to be pricier than the average network series and hasn’t made a significant impact on ratings. In its premiere in September, it attracted 5.96 million live viewers, while the latest available data (March 20) shows 5.19 million viewers tuned in. The show’s first episode was seen by 16.5 million cross-platform viewers after 35 days, but since then, there hasn’t been much mention beyond that, except in November.
The television series “9-1-1” is headlined by Angela Bassett, Peter Krause, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Oliver Stark, Kenneth Choi, Aisha Hinds, Ryan Guzman, and Gavin McHugh. Murphy collaborated with Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear in creating the series, all three of them serving as executive producers, with Minear acting as showrunner. In addition to Bassett, Krause, Angela Bassett, Peter Krause, John J. Gray, Brad Buecker, Kristen Reidel, Lyndsey Beaulieu, Ted Griffen and Robert M. Williams are also executive producers. Although Krista Vernoff steps down as showrunner, she remains an executive producer alongside Mark Gordon, Debbie Allen, and Zoanne Clack. The studio responsible is 20th Television.
The main cast of ‘The Rookie’ includes Nathan Fillion, Mekia Cox, Alyssa Diaz, Richard T. Jones, Melissa O’Neil, Eric Winter, Jenna Dewan, Shawn Ashmore, and Lisseth Chavez. This series is jointly produced by Lionsgate Television and 20th Television. Alexi Hawley serves as its creator and executive producer.
