However, in an exceptional episode titled “Chimmy Begins,” we get a glimpse into why he goes by this moniker rather than Howard or Howie. This shift feels authentic and true to the character, as Chimney seems to embody his nickname so fully that it’s hard to imagine him as anything else, even his wife referring to him as Chimney more often than not.

For nearly eight seasons now, the enigmatic origins of Chimney’s nickname have turned into a recurring joke within the series. Characters either decline to share the story or are interrupted before they can disclose the details. It’s plausible that the show 9-1-1 might conclude without ever revealing the background of Chimney’s nickname.
