8 Shocking Deaths Fans Predict for Avengers: Doomsday That You Won’t Believe!

In the 2026 film “Avengers: Doomsday”, it is expected that Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Doctor Doom will demonstrate his formidable power against some of the mightiest heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Known for playing Iron Man’s Tony Stark for over a decade during the Infinity Saga, Downey Jr. is now set to rejoin the MCU as Victor Von Doom, one of Marvel Comics’ most potent and recognized supervillains. Since Doctor Doom will not have any prior introduction before “Avengers: Doomsday”, directed by the Russo brothers, he must make a strong debut in the MCU.

Marvel Studios announced that they had finalized the casting of 27 actors for the film “Avengers: Doomsday” by the end of March, which includes members from the Avengers, Thunderbolts, X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Robert Downey Jr. himself. Although more actors are expected to join in “Doomsday,” it’s likely that not every character from the Marvel Cinematic Universe who will appear in this Phase 6 crossover will make it through the events of “Avengers: Doomsday.” In my opinion, at least eight characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe are predicted to perish in “Avengers: Doomsday,” possibly many more.

8. James Marsden’s Cyclops

James Marsden Debuted As Cyclops In 2000’s X-Men

The news that James Marsden is set to reappear as Cyclops (Scott Summers) from the X-Men series 20 years after his untimely demise in 2006’s “X-Men: The Last Stand” is generating a lot of excitement. It appears that Marsden might be reviving his character from the X-Men franchise by 20th Century Fox, and it seems possible that the timeline of Earth-10005 will be revisited following the events of “X-Men: Days of Future Past” and “Deadpool & Wolverine.” Although it would be unfortunate if Marsden’s Cyclops met his end again in his next live-action outing, as he did in his previous one, it seems probable that Doctor Doom will aim to eliminate the entire universe where he resides.

In another universe, Earth-10005, if Doctor Doom sets his sights on this world as part of his mission to obliterate various planets to prevent the multiverse from collapsing, Cyclops could find himself in grave danger among many other heroes. James Marsden’s portrayal of Scott Summers demands a significant comeback in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, given that he was consistently underutilized and overlooked in the Fox X-Men series. Marvel Studios has the chance to flesh out his character more, but it appears highly probable that Cyclops will meet his end at the hands of Doctor Doom, allowing the villain to leave a bold and immediate mark.

7. Alan Cumming’s Nightcrawler

Alan Cumming Debuted As Nightcrawler In 2003’s X2: X-Men United

In the cast of Avengers: Doomsday, Alan Cumming stands out as an unexpected returnee at this point. Back in 2003, he portrayed Kurt Wagner’s Nightcrawler in X2: X-Men United. His character was manipulated by William Stryker to launch an attack on the U.S. President and draw the X-Men into danger. Since Kodi Smit-McPhee has taken over the role of Nightcrawler, there seems to be a single explanation for why Alan Cumming’s older version might reappear.

Nightcrawler’s Live-Action Movie Year Actor
X2: X-Men United 2003 Alan Cumming
X-Men: Apocalypse 2016 Kodi Smit-McPhee
Deadpool 2 2018 Kodi Smit-McPhee
Dark Phoenix 2019 Kodi Smit-McPhee
Avengers: Doomsday 2026 Alan Cumming

In the Marvel Comics universe, I’ve had my share of encounters with Doctor Doom and Nightcrawler, but those were mostly when he was an official member of the X-Men. If the rumors about Avengers: Doomsday are true, we might see Fox’s X-Men team back in action with Nightcrawler among them, despite his absence from X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men: Days of Future Past. As a fan, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation about the return of Nightcrawler, especially since Alan Cumming, who plays him, is now in his 60s. If this storyline unfolds as it seems to be heading, it would be a powerful emotional moment for fans like me if Nightcrawler were to meet his end at the hands of Robert Downey Jr.’s new supervillain.

6. David Harbour’s Red Guardian

David Harbour Debuted As Red Guardian In 2021’s Black Widow

In a similar vein to how Natasha Romanoff, Alexei Shostakov’s fictional daughter, made the ultimate sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame, there is a strong possibility that he may meet a tragic end in Avengers: Doomsday. Following his exciting introduction in Black Widow (2021) and subsequent promotion to main character in Thunderbolts, Alexei Shostakov has become a key member of the MCU’s latest team. However, this new role as a Thunderbolt member may lead to a devastating outcome for David Harbour’s formidable super-soldier.

In an impactful and heartfelt scene, Red Guardian will reappear alongside his adoptive daughter, Florence Pugh’s character Yelena Belova. A moving moment might involve Shostakov making the ultimate sacrifice to save Yelena, possibly giving himself up to Doctor Doom in exchange for her life. Such an exit for David Harbour’s character in the MCU, as seen in “Avengers: Doomsday,” could be given a profound and resonant emotional weight.

5. Rebecca Romijn’s Mystique

Rebecca Romijn Debuted As Mystique In 2000’s X-Men

Jennifer Lawrence played Mystique in Fox’s updated X-Men series, adding depth and character to the shape-shifting mutant. However, it was Rebecca Romijn who initially portrayed her in the original X-Men trilogy. Given that Marvel Studios is reintroducing the classic X-Men cast in Avengers: Doomsday, it’s exciting to anticipate Romijn returning as Raven Darkhölme. Nevertheless, it appears unlikely that this will be a long-term comeback, given Marvel Studios’ plans to revamp the X-Men team within the MCU.

It seems that a fresh installment of the X-Men is set to premiere in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, possibly featuring a younger cast. Given this change, it’s plausible that many of the original X-Men actors from the 20th Century Fox series won’t make it past Phase 6 of the MCU. Among them is Rebecca Romijn’s Mystique, who was last portrayed without her mutant powers in X-Men: The Last Stand, although the “cure” for her mutation was hinted to be temporary. There’s a chance Mystique could reappear as part of the X-Men squad, squaring off against Doctor Doom. This confrontation might result in her dramatic and surprising demise.

4. Ian McKellen’s Magneto

Ian McKellen Debuted As Magneto In 2000’s X-Men

In the anticipated film “Avengers: Doomsday,” there’s speculation that a classic X-Men adversary, Magneto, portrayed originally by Sir Ian McKellen, might make a comeback as an ally and potential X-Man. While Michael Fassbender played Magneto brilliantly, it’s exciting to imagine McKellen reprising his role. Given the age of Sir Ian McKellen (85 years old), it wouldn’t be unexpected if this older, more experienced Magneto met his end in “Avengers: Doomsday.

In the MCU, the demise of Ian McKellen’s Magneto could pave the way for a new actor to step into the role in the X-Men reboot or future projects. Although it would undoubtedly be emotional for Doctor Doom to end Erik Lehnsherr, it might serve as a fitting and poignant send-off for this version of Magneto, especially considering the Russo brothers’ upcoming crossover events. Marvel Studios should consider this possibility, as Doctor Doom’s armored metal suit could make Magneto victorious, but the power of Robert Downey Jr.’s villain is formidable enough to challenge Magneto.

3. Patrick Stewart’s Professor X

Patrick Stewart Debuted As Professor X In 2000’s X-Men

Just like Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart is set to reprise his role as Charles Xavier’s Professor X, 26 years after he first portrayed the telepathic mutant in the 2000’s X-Men. Interestingly, Stewart has already played a version of Professor X in the MCU, appearing as a member of Earth-838’s Illuminati in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. However, it appears that Avengers: Doomsday will bring him back to his original character from Fox’s X-Men timeline. Given that Avengers: Doomsday seems to be set between Days of Future Past and Logan, it implies that Professor X will still be alive in this new film.

It wouldn’t make sense for Patrick Stewart’s character as Professor X from the original Fox series to meet his end in “Avengers: Doomsday,” since he has a role to play in the storyline of “Logan.” However, it’s possible that “Logan” takes place in an alternate universe. Alternatively, Patrick Stewart might reprise his role as a different version of Professor X, allowing Doctor Doom to defeat him in the Marvel Cinematic Universe during Phase 6. If Doctor Doom were to eliminate Earth-10005, it would result in the death of Professor X, and such an act would be a significant show of power for Doctor Doom to defeat the leader of the X-Men single-handedly.

2. Chris Hemsworth’s Thor

Chris Hemsworth Debuted As Thor In 2011’s Thor

In the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday, it’s plausible that various X-Men characters who return might meet their end at the hands of Doctor Doom, or even some of our existing Marvel Cinatic Universe (MCU) heroes could be in danger. The selfless sacrifices made by Steve Rogers, Tony Stark, and Natasha Romanoff to save the universe from Thanos in Endgame set a precedent for Chris Hemsworth’s Thor potentially making the ultimate sacrifice to protect the entire multiverse in Doomsday. There have been discussions about Thor possibly leaving the MCU following the reception of Thor: Love and Thunder, which could mean his departure might occur during Phase 6.

Chris Hemsworth’s Live-Action MCU Project Year Role
Thor 2011 Lead
The Avengers 2012 Main Cast
Thor: The Dark World 2013 Lead
Avengers: Age of Ultron 2015 Main Cast
Doctor Strange 2016 Cameo
Thor: Ragnarok 2017 Lead
Avengers: Infinity War 2018 Main Cast
Avengers: Endgame 2019 Main Cast
Loki Season 1 2021 Cameo
Thor: Love and Thunder 2022 Lead
Deadpool & Wolverine 2024 Cameo
Avengers: Doomsday 2026 TBD

Since Chris Hemsworth first appeared in Phase 1 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he has been a key figure. However, Marvel Studios hasn’t quite nailed the characterization of Thor in the MCU. So far, Hemsworth is the only hero to have four solo films and has featured in all Avengers projects. Initially, Hemsworth was announced as returning for “Avengers: Doomsday,” but his upcoming role might signal trouble for Thor. This could pave the way for a highly anticipated storyline set in Valhalla for “Thor 5,” potentially causing significant turmoil for other Earth-based heroes within the MCU.

1. Loki

Tom Hiddleston Debuted As Loki In 2011’s Thor

The excitement among dedicated Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fans escalated further with the announcement that Tom Hiddleston would reprise his role as the trickster god Loki. This is significant because it provides an opportunity for Loki to reunite with his sibling Thor. Moreover, considering the finale of “Loki” season 2 where Loki took over from He Who Remains and the Temporal Loom, becoming the protector of the multiverse, it’s quite logical that Loki would appear in “Avengers: Doomsday.” Given his unfathomable power, it is clear that Doctor Doom would be keen to possess such abilities for himself.

Theories circulate that Loki might assume the role of the Beyonders in Marvel Comics’ 2015 ‘Secret Wars’ event. It is proposed that Doctor Doom obtained the power of the Beyonders to become strong enough to construct Battleworld following the incursions that demolished the multiverse. If this transpires in the MCU’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, it could mean that Doctor Doom acquires Loki’s newfound power, potentially leading to another demise for Loki. However, it remains uncertain what Tom Hiddleston’s future role might be within the Marvel Cinematic Universe beyond Phase 6.
