8 Pokémon Games with the Most Surprising Difficulty Spikes

Pokémon games aren’t usually very challenging, but when a battle is difficult, it’s definitely memorable.

Most Pokémon games include at least one battle that feels incredibly difficult and requires careful planning or a lot of repetitive training to win. These tough fights are well-known within the Pokémon fanbase, and players often jokingly complain about them as if the game is personally challenging them.

However, many of the game’s challenging moments aren’t just random – they’re actually well-designed by the developers at Game Freak. Even after 30 years of making Pokémon games, they continue to find new ways to test players and encourage them to develop smart, effective strategies for overcoming difficult obstacles.

We’ve rounded up 8 unexpectedly tough moments in Pokémon games that really challenged players and forced them to up their game.

8. Pokémon FireRed / LeafGreen

Blue’s Rival Battle on the S.S. Anne

Pokémon battles have always been a core part of the games, but many players consider the Blue opponent in FireRed and LeafGreen to be the most challenging and unpredictable they’ve faced.

Blue faces several difficult battles in the game, but the unexpected fight on the S.S. Anne is arguably the most annoying.

Once you’ve prepared your boat by removing items and healing your Pokémon, you’ll try to go upstairs to get the HM ‘Cut’. But your rival will suddenly appear and challenge you to a battle! If you didn’t heal beforehand, you might get worried, but even with a full team, Blue’s Pokémon are still tough opponents.

Blue will start the battle with his Pidgeotto, and he might repeatedly use Sand-Attack, which can significantly lower your Pokémon’s accuracy and likely force you to switch to a different one.

Once you defeat Blue’s Pidgeotto, his Raticate will come out – be careful, as its powerful Hyper Fang can quickly knock out one of your Pokémon. Next, he’ll send out Karabra, which is tough to defeat quickly at this stage of the game. Finally, you’ll face Blue’s starter Pokémon, which may be strong enough to defeat your entire team if you’re not prepared.

This version of Blue isn’t necessarily the strongest opponent, but the unexpected nature of his team and the limited options to counter it create a surprisingly difficult challenge in the game.

7. Pokémon Legends: Z-A

The Restaurant Le Wow Quest

The “Restaurant Le Wow” quest in Pokémon is notoriously difficult and exhausting. It forces you to battle ten teams consecutively without using any items. To make things even harder, the first trainer you face has a team designed to constantly inflict poison damage.

If your team doesn’t have a Pokémon that’s immune to poison – like a Poison or Steel-type – it will be hard to survive all 10 rounds while affected by poison. You can use Pecha Berries or Safeguard to try and counter it, but that means giving up a valuable item slot for a single use cure.

The upcoming trainers are all quite skilled and each has a unique strategy you’ll need to figure out. For instance, the sixth trainer, Estelle, focuses on defense, trying to wear you down and trick you into making mistakes. But all of these battles are just preparation for the real test: Christoph, the last trainer you’ll face.

His Drampa is tougher than it looks because it’s holding onto some powerful leftovers. His Skarmory also packs a punch with its rocky helmet, making moves like Drill Run and Iron Head extra strong. However, the real threat is his Mega Tyranitar, which has a diverse moveset including Stone Edge, Earthquake, Crunch, and Fire Fang, making it hard to counter.

If you somehow complete the challenge without seeing it beforehand on your first attempt, you’ll likely be incredibly relieved – and probably need to calm down with a walk!

6. Pokémon Ultra Sun / Ultra Moon

Totem Lurantis

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon were more challenging than the original games, and many players found Totem Lurantis to be the most difficult opponent.

The Alola region marked a big change for the Pokémon series, replacing the traditional Gyms with island challenges designed to test trainers. The Totem Lurantis battle proved to be one of the most difficult challenges yet, comparable to facing even the strongest Gym Leaders.

During battle, Lurantis will frequently call upon Comfey or Kecleon to create bright sunlight with the move Sunny Day. This is dangerous because Lurantis then repeatedly uses Synthesis, a healing move that’s much stronger when the sun is shining. Lurantis also has Solarblade, a powerful attack that doesn’t need a charging turn while the sun is out. To make things worse, Comfey will protect Lurantis with Flower Shield, boosting its defense and making it difficult to defeat in a single hit.

Trying to win against Lurantis by poisoning it or using status effects won’t work. Its ability, Leaf Guard, completely protects it from those kinds of problems. Your best options are either landing a critical hit to defeat it quickly, or hoping you can deplete its Synthesis PP before it defeats your entire team.

5. Pokémon Black 2 / White 2

Elesa’s Volt Switching Pokémon Party

Pokémon Black and White 2 is often considered the most challenging of the core Pokémon games. Unlike previous installments that discourage excessive grinding, this game features a surprisingly tough artificial intelligence for its trainers. While earlier gym leaders weren’t exactly easy, Elena truly makes you carefully consider your strategy before every move.

Elesa, the Electric-type Gym Leader, likes to use Volt Switch, a move that lets her swap Pokémon while attacking. This makes it hard to knock out one Pokémon at a time because she constantly switches, slowly weakening your team. To make things even more difficult, she starts the battle with Emolga, which is immune to Ground-type moves. Emolga also has an ability called Static, which can paralyze your Pokémon if you hit it with a physical attack, making her constant switching and chipping away at your team even more dangerous.

If you haven’t experienced competitive battling, you’ve probably never seen a team built quite like this one. And if you didn’t know the trainer specialized in electric-type Pokémon, you might be surprised by her Emolga.

Elesa’s team is among the first major challenges players encounter, and serves as a reminder to always be ready for anything the game throws at you.

4. Pokémon Colosseum

Cipher Admin Dakim

Pokémon Black and White 2 are known for being very challenging, but many fans consider Pokémon Colosseum to be the most difficult Pokémon game ever made.

The game is challenging because there aren’t many Pokémon to catch or train. To stay on pace with the story, you’ll often need to actively seek out extra quests and battles to level up your team.

If you’re following the main storyline, you might find the battle against Cipher Admin Dakim on Mt. Battle particularly challenging. You’ll have to defeat ten trainers before even reaching Dakim, which can use up a lot of your potions and other healing items. Even without that extra challenge, Dakim is a tough opponent.

Dakim starts with strong, defensive Pokémon – Golem and Metang – creating a tough barrier early on. He’ll repeatedly use Protect and Earthquake, slowly chipping away at your team’s health and making it hard to attack effectively. Even after breaking through this initial defense, you’ll face his Marshtomp and Camerupt, which will continue to use the same frustrating strategy.

While Flying-type Pokémon can counter this approach, the opposing team is still well-prepared and can easily defeat you regardless.

Okay, so I’ve been leveling up, trying to get strong enough to take on Dakim, but it might actually backfire. His last Pokémon is a level 40 Entei, and here’s the tricky part: I need to weaken it, not knock it out, if I actually want to catch it. Honestly, after fighting through all his other Pokémon, I’m worried I won’t have enough potions or healing items left to hang in there while I try to catch it – Entei hits hard with those fire attacks, and stalling could be really tough.

This battle is incredibly difficult early on, and it constantly throws new obstacles your way just when you feel like you’re getting ahead.

3. Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red & Blue Rescue Team

“Accidentally” Stealing from Kecleon

If you leave Kecleon’s shop without paying, he’ll immediately accuse you of stealing and turn the shop into a scary, trap-filled maze.

You’ll quickly encounter a lot of powerful Kecleon that will aggressively chase you and can defeat you with just one hit early in the game. Even if you survive, you might be left with so little health that you’ll have to give up on your current task before making much progress.

The real problem is you can easily fall off the edge of the world without realizing it, and Kecleon won’t bother helping you understand what happened.

It’s likely you’ll face this situation eventually, and the first time will probably be a bit embarrassing, but you can learn from it.

2. Pokémon Emerald

Flannery’s Torkoal

Okay, so Pokémon Emerald’s beginning is seriously challenging! The gym leaders come at you hard right from the start, and honestly, Lt. Surge was a real pain to get through. You’d think beating him would give you some breathing room, but nope! He was just preparing me for the absolute toughest gym leader in the whole Gen 3, believe it or not.

Flannery is the Fire-type Gym Leader, and if you didn’t choose Mudkip as your starter Pokémon, her gym battle will likely be quite challenging.

Flannery’s gym is notoriously difficult to get through, and her Pokémon team is incredibly strong.

During the battle with Flannery, she’ll repeatedly use Sunny Day, a move all of her Pokémon know, and also Overheat. Sunny Day makes Water-type attacks less effective, and at this point in the game, you likely don’t have many strong Rock or Ground-type moves to deal reliable damage.

Okay, so Flannery is tough. If she gets her team set up right, she just loves spamming Overheat – it seriously hurts whatever Pokémon I have out there. And to make things worse, her Camerupt can also use Body Slam, which has a chance to paralyze my Pokémon, making it even harder to win. It’s a rough battle!

The biggest problem is the Gym Leader’s Torkoal. It can use the same tricky strategy as before – boosting its power with Sunny Day, then attacking with Overheat and Body Slam. Plus, it can draw your Pokémon in close, making it hard to damage. On top of all that, Torkoal is incredibly durable and will take a lot of effort to defeat.

After you defeat Flannery’s Pokémon, your team will likely be very weak and need healing at a Pokémon Center.

1. Pokémon Gold / Silver

Whitney’s Miltank

Whitney is famous for being a tough opponent in the Pokémon games, and her Miltank is the main reason why. Many players remember struggling to beat Whitney because of that one Pokémon!

If you don’t specifically prepare a team to counter it, Whitney’s Miltank will be incredibly difficult to defeat. It has a powerful combination of attacks: Stomp deals strong damage, Attract can disrupt your Pokémon, and Milk Drink keeps Miltank healthy. But Miltank is best known for its devastating Rollout attack.

Miltank is very durable, so it takes a while to defeat. As you chip away at its health, it builds up power for its Rollout attack, which can quickly defeat your entire team unless you use moves that inflict status conditions. By the time Rollout is fully charged, it’s powerful enough to nearly knock out any Pokémon weak to Rock-type attacks.

Leveling up Pokémon in the Johto region can be a real grind, so many players will likely have a team around the same level as Whitney’s Miltank, making the battle even tougher. It might be an unpopular opinion, but Whitney is probably the first genuinely difficult opponent you’ll face before taking on the Elite Four, and she’s sure to surprise players on their first playthrough.

Even now, many Pokémon players remember Whitney’s Miltank as a notoriously difficult opponent. More than 25 years after the game first came out, it’s often the first thing people think of when discussing the series’ challenging moments.
