8 Blockbuster Movies Everyone Expected to Be Classics—But Nobody Talks About Anymore

Sometimes, I find myself drawn to movies that appear destined for greatness, only to see them vanish from the collective consciousness just as swiftly. The world of cinema can be amusing in its capriciousness, with some films soaring to the heights and remaining there, while countless others rise and fall like waves on a shore. It’s unusual when a movie emerges that strikes a chord with audiences, becoming an immediate classic. Yet, it’s not uncommon for new releases to strike gold and leave an indelible mark on viewers.

Conversely, certain films seem poised to become timeless classics with their star-studded casts, unique ideas, breathtaking visuals, and epic stories that promise success. Often, these predictions hold true, as blockbusters with such hype go on to be recognized among the greatest films of all time. Nevertheless, there are films that were highly anticipated but ultimately failed to make a lasting impact and slipped into obscurity instead.

8. Thank You for Smoking

To begin with, it’s safe to say that many people have overlooked or forgotten the existence of the film “Thank You for Smoking,” despite its clever and intriguing premise and a talented cast led by Aaron Eckhart as a spokesman for tobacco. The film presents a unique perspective on an industry known for causing death, illness, and addiction, even though it was directed by Jason Reitman, who later became famous for directing the dark comedy “Juno.” Despite its potential and Reitman’s subsequent success, this movie tends to be overlooked.

Absolutely, the topic we’re discussing can be a bit sensitive, similar to how teen pregnancy was handled in the movie Juno. That film was smartly written, humorously presented, dark, and skillfully produced. Yet, despite its many strengths, it seems to have slipped into obscurity, while lighter comedies frequently find their way onto top 100 lists. I believe that the film Thank You for Smoking, which was released in 2005, deserves more acknowledgment even twenty years later, given that its theme of corporate greed resonates powerfully in today’s context.

7. Life of Pi

In the following year, “Life of Pi” was released in 2012, three years subsequent to “Avatar”. Similar to “Avatar”, “Life of Pi” received acclaim for its breathtaking visuals and computer-generated effects. Notably, “Life of Pi” earned four Oscars, one more than the number of Oscars won by “Avatar”. With a production budget of $120 million, “Life of Pi” managed to gross approximately 5.2 times that amount at the box office, earning nearly $620 million (as reported by The Numbers).

As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but notice that Life of Pi, though sharing similarities with Avatar, seems to have fallen out of the limelight when discussing top-tier CGI films. This could be because the studio that brought us the breathtaking special effects faced financial difficulties shortly after winning the Oscar, a fate often meted out by the unforgiving and financially reckless film industry towards VFX artists. Regardless of the reasons, Life of Pi deserved more recognition, and in terms of narrative depth and visually stunning realism, it surpassed Avatar in numerous aspects.

6. The Artist

In 2011, Hollywood returned to the roots of cinematography by creating a contemporary silent film in black and white. This unique and intelligent production tells a story set during a time when talkies (movies with sound) were gaining popularity, focusing on the changing relationships as this new norm emerged. The movie’s exceptional presentation earned it five Academy Awards.

Despite being released over 15 years ago, The Artist seems to have slipped into obscurity, seldom mentioned among the notable films of that era. This movie, characterized by its creativity, emotion, and wit, has seemingly become a forgotten gem, much like the films it portrays as falling out of fashion.

5. Clash of the Titans

Louis Leterrier has significantly impacted some of the most significant films in contemporary Hollywood. He is known for directing movies like The Incredible Hulk, the initial two Transporter films, and Now You See Me. However, in 2010, he unveiled a fantasy masterpiece that aimed to revolutionize the genre, featuring Sam Worthington and Liam Neeson. Clash of the Titans, while applauded widely, has unfortunately become one of the lesser-known films in Leterrier’s impressive portfolio.

It’s surprising that a film as highly anticipated and full of promise as Clash of the Titans seemed to slip under the radar and didn’t receive the acclaim it deserved. Although you might find it listed among fantasy epics, the truth is that the movie didn’t get its fair share of attention. Given the impressive talent on board, particularly Liam Neeson playing Zeus, it’s puzzling why this film didn’t garner more recognition.

4. Stardust

2007 saw the release of a distinct fantasy epic with a gifted ensemble cast, many of whom were relatively new to the scene. Notably starring Charlie Cox, famously known for his portrayal of Matt Murdock (Daredevil) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this film also boasts Henry Cavill, Michelle Pfeiffer, Mark Strong, Robert De Niro, and Ben Barnes. To cap it off, it was helmed by Matthew Vaughn, who has directed films like “Kick-Ass,” “X-Men: First Class,” and “Kingsman: The Secret Service.

It’s astonishing to find such an impressive roster of films, only to discover that this one, a captivating blend of dark fantasy and comedy with a tender heart, has received less acclaim than its counterparts. The protagonist, portrayed by Cox, is an endearing, naive young hero who embodies the ideal Prince Charming on his journey of self-discovery. Somehow, this film managed to fly under the radar and escape public attention.

3. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe

C.S. Lewis is considered one of the most remarkable storytellers in history, with tales as vast and captivating as the legendary lands of Mordor from “The Lord of the Rings” series. Across his seven Chronicles of Narnia books, he weaves a complex and intricate narrative using his incredible imagination, which unfortunately did not receive the recognition it deserved after the 2005 film and its sequels.

Initially, it’s unusual for a film to receive such widespread acclaim as to spawn numerous sequels, but then lose popularity. That’s precisely what transpired with the movie The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

20 years after its initial release, the movie is garnering renewed interest thanks to acclaimed director Greta Gerwig’s upcoming adaptation of the Narnia series in partnership with Netflix. However, these films have been undervalued for quite some time, considering their groundbreaking contributions to bringing these monumental stories to life on the silver screen.

2. Cloverfield

Currently, there’s no doubt that Cloverfield stirred up a fair amount of debate. For those who recall the buzz and anticipation surrounding its release, it should come as no surprise. Cloverfield was a tale cloaked in enigma, with a promotional strategy that revealed scarcely anything about it. It had an air similar to the buildup for The Blair Witch Project, and the expectation was that this film would produce something equally memorable.

Though Cloverfield achieved some level of success and spawned a series of follow-ups, one of which only loosely tied back to the original until the finale, the film seems to have transcended its initial 15 minutes of fame and faded from public awareness. While there are those who recall the movie and its sequels, it pales in comparison to the widespread acclaim and popularity that was anticipated during its promotional phase.

1. Sherlock Holmes

As a dedicated admirer, I couldn’t help but be captivated by the Sherlock Holmes movie. When a sequel graced our screens, it wasn’t bad per se, but it didn’t quite reach the heights of its predecessor. Here’s why I believe that happened: Robert Downey Jr., an exceptional talent, brings a riveting portrayal to the world’s most renowned detective. However, he faced formidable competition from another Marvel Cinematic Universe comrade, Benedict Cumberbatch, who was already immersing audiences in his own unique interpretation of Sherlock on the series Sherlock.

The writing, performances, and storytelling in that series were captivating, potentially outshining RDJ on the silver screen. Both productions presented unique perspectives of the legendary character. However, as talks about sequels dwindled, it seems the excitement for these movies waned. Yet, here’s hoping the future will be more generous to these films, allowing them to re-enter the conversation with renewed vigor.
